IT'S NOT BENNINGS!

IT'S NOT BENNINGS!

43 years later and this movie still hasn't been topped when it comes to horror

Hereditary is the perfect horror movie

I prefer SOTL but it's a pretty different style of horror

it's really more of an action thriller than a horror movie

Huurrr I didn't find it scary therefore it's not horror

It isn't even a horror film as such... More like suspense mixed with gore?

action

There’s no action sequences though. I mean people use flamethrowers and such once and awhile but I dunno… doesn’t scream Top Gun where it’s constant

Yeah, there isn't a really a sequence where they are running around shooting and fighting, except for the very end and maybe one or two sequences where the flamethrowers are used. If anything I think they make a deliberate choice to avoid using guns. Everyone opts for a flamethrower which I guess makes sense, but they have a cabinet of rifles they never even get out

Why did it act like this? Did The Thing give up here?

they never even get out

Yes, they do. Mac uses one to shoot Clark. The rest of the guns they keep locked up because they very quickly determine that people are untrustworthy and don't want everyone to have one. Then after Blair's revelations (Blair also had a gun and shot at them), they quickly see that guns really aren't that useful since it not only wouldn't kill a thing but shooting it could spread its infection all over other people.

The tension is based on information more than anything else. When they discover a thing in time they get to kill it, if they fail it kills them.

Horror is a film genre that seeks to elicit physical or psychological fear in its viewers. Broad elements include monsters, apocalyptic events, and religious or folk beliefs.

Oh look, it's a fucking horror movie. Retard.

No, it's a slasher

I regard Macgready (really Garry's) Pistol as a plot telling device rather than a weapon. I know they have the pistol that is used once or twice and the Norway guys have them but they don't really use them much.

this retard hasn't seem Shrooms

Lmao

The Tim Curry IT movie is the best horror movie ever as long as you're a kid when you watch it

So we're all in agreement that neither Keith David or Kurt Russell was the thing at the end and they both froze to death, right?

It's ambiguous. If you think there's enough proof that can be gleaned from the film to make a certain decision then you don't understand filmmaking.

the music is so good at that moment

It's not ambiguous at all, kek. Carpenter provided a bunch of scenes and evidence to show you that Childs is a thing. You're a retard if you need him to come onto the screen and tell you directly in words.

No. That's all that need be said.

They done did some film making to imply Childs was a fella, but whatever

That fella just ain't right, I tell ya what. He musta been one of em thingamajigs.

Such as?

It knew it gonna be revealed sooner or later, better do something loud and weird to divert attention from other assimilated guys that act perfectly normal

Only symbolism in giving a drink, mirroring opening chess scene where computer cheated, and that Childs got to be pretty lucky to go around alone and not get touched
Also McCready supposed to have a flamethrower right under his blanket
If any of them is the Thing, than it won because it doesn't care about freezing, and base gonna be discovered rather soon
Also that Thing cells could be in booze and drinking it without thinking, means you don't care about infection = you are the spook
I don't really buy it, they did explain that Thing replaces cells, but no indication that it actually can work up from cells to take over a body, why bother grabbing and consuming people physically then

I liked it. It showed the Thing was not perfect nor super fast and super smart like how modern movies depict things. It needed time to rip into someone, assimilate them and form a copy. And can be surprised and overwhelmed. It can also need recovery periods and not have infinite energy to turn back into a monster and lash out easily killing everyone. That makes the whole story more interesting and plausible.

He was black.

in the game childs freezes to death but macready gets away okay. there were still some things alive at the norwegian base though. john carpenter is in it so it counts

It doesn't count though. What is presented in the movie is all that counts. And he was 100% a Thing as shown by Carpenter. It's just like Ridley can't come back to blade runner years later and say Deckard was le actually a replicant all along!

Iirc carpenter thought about a sequel for a bit many years ago and said he considered justifying their age from "frostbite", so in Carpenter's head both were still alive and would've been in the sequel.

Not at all. Carpenter himself showed that Childs was sleepy on guard and anyone can walk up behind him. Carpenter himself showed that the generator room is right behind where Childs was standing. Carpenter himself showed that Childs was missing, the coats were messed up, then that Childs was stumbling out into the cold against their plan and supposedly to run after Blair. Seconds later, Carpenter himself then specifically showed the audience that Blair was inside the generator room turning off the power, so Childs lie was obvious. Carpenter himself showed you that Blair surprised Childs, assimilated him, and sent him out to either freeze or attack the remaining humans, while Blair attacked the generator. It's a good example of why "show, don't tell" doesn't work very well especially with slight ambiguity. Retards won't get it, and morons will always try to come back later and change it because they want LE TWIST!

it's really more of an action thriller than a horror movie

is that why i liked it?

Now that the dust has settled, what did we think of it?

the thing.jpg - 2048x1365, 1.57M

CGI sucked but the movie was okay

I meant "alive" in that if he were to write a sequel both survived the ending as whatever they were.

lame. far too similar to the thing. they should have went with a different angle maybe something like nobody knew it could imitate

Carpenter himself showed you that <headcannon that is not shown>

or he just panicked or imagined something from being sleep deprived

a sequel can't expand on something

category 5 retard alert. does die hard 2 not count because it wasn't "presented" in die hard 1?

Also that Thing cells could be in booze and drinking it without thinking, means you don't care about infection = you are the spook

And so the retard reveals himself.
The Thing copies clearly act as if they are concerned about infection, being perfect imitations. So there is no reason to assume it wouldn't also imitate Childs' paranoia about drinking from the bottle, if it was there.
If Childs was human he could have drank from the bottle because he knew he was going to die and didn't care about infection by that point. He may have just let his guard down or thought MacReady must be legit.
This idea that the Thing broke character as a perfect imitator for no reason needs to die, alongside gasoline theory and earring theory.
The reason MacReady laughs at the end isn't because The Thing won, but because he realizes that the last two survivors can't trust each other.

why didn't the thing turn into a fly and buzz away

it can't form complex moving parts

Nigga, it formed an entire fucking human being and then turned him into a venus flytrap made of meat and teeth.

chekt
you're all wrong, if you pay attention, you realise the whole film is just a dream/hallucination and was based on stories of cabin fever where men isolated for long periods would go insane and attack each other.
that's all that happened, I don't know why you people don't see the obvious metaphor. it is literally the same plot as the shining, hallucinations and all.

derp

I don't think there are flies in Antarctica.

it's actually a Christmas film, hence the north pole, the snow.
but if you want to genreise it, it's more of a romance - the guy and his talking computer, the bearded guy clearly loves his dogs, and the alien representing an orgy

the FNAF movie literally mogs it

it was all a dream. no one died. grow up

deckard was a replica, total recall was all a dream, robocop was murphy's fantasies while he was dying, rambo was just flashbacks from battle fatigue, over the top was the little boy's day dream of being able to hang out with his father, the little mermaid was a sailor's sea sickness induced nightmare, Mary Poppins was a chimney sweep's hallucination while he died of black lung.
the list is endless

then why did they have a fridge for the food?
checkmate

I think this is the most reasonable answer. Or they’re both Things and they accepted freezing

everyone on earth was a thing before the film even started, and it wasn't an alien at all, it was robots in the future. you can tell because they "died" when the guy threw the glass of water that them, it frizzled their circuits.

Ruined by the soft reboot aspect. Exact same plot and exact same story beats, but also wants to "explain" what happened at the previous camp.
If they did a normal reboot it might have worked, if they went all in on a prequel that would have worked too. But instead they ended up pleasing absolutely nobody.

fpbp
The Thing rocks thoughalbeit.

lol whatever pleb didn’t even include the ultimate

jeff bridges knew that kid was fucking his wife

he specifically selected him because he happened to look like their twin sons who died

Both traits ..of a horror film you fucking retard.

don't know the reference.
tron 2?

I like that the movie came out shortly after I was born, so it's more special to me and it makes me better than most fans of The Thing

childs is the thing because of two important things, remember the monster was in the basement of the building, so it had to get through childs to get to the basement.

secondly if you look at the coat racket childs was hanging out at, you will see a blue jacket missing from the following scene where it shows the empty room childs was guarding. meaning, the thing broke in, childs ripped up his jacket, he took a new jacket from the coat rack.

it's not scary lol
