The last pic was created by Grant Morrison for the 2011 reboot, the same guy that wrote All-Star Superman, the book every Superman fan proclaim to love and use as an example of Superman done right or the best Superman there is.
It was also Morrison attempt to bring Superman back to his roots as a folk hero and social champion, trying to fight for the oppressed and going after the corrupt.
The shirt was an attempt to humanize him as a regular guy, salt of the earth, and Morrison even gave him common farmer jeans and working boots.
You can say that Morrison made an error in his attempt to modernize the look, but the idea was all designed to bring the character back to his 30s roots.

This could've helped endear the character to the mainstream. Him being just a guy who happens to have powers and wants to do good with them can go a long way.

That's exactly what Grant Morrison attempt to do.
He's essentially wearing common farmer attire, with a Superman shirt his mom made for him, and the blanket he came with as a baby as a cape. He's pretty much a redneck moving to the big city and trying to help everyone with his powers, and getting enraged by the senseless violence and corruption of the big city.

Of course, eventually the editors and other writers forced Morrison's hand, to give him a new high-tech kryptonian suit, full of random lines and such, the same design that Gunn's Superman based their costume on. But before that you had redneck Superman out to save everyone.

I didn't like the comic that much, nor the idea of reboot at all, but to try and twist everything into some "edgy" redesign is just nonsense.

To this day I appreciate Morrison's effort but that book simply doesn't work. Morrison didn't wrote anything interesting in the last 10 years or so, maybe he should go back to drugs, but then again Moore, Ellis and Ennis are on the same boat. Maybe they are just old after all.
