Four dead bookies and a million missing dollars. This nutty dame was a private dick's nightmare. But her gams stretched so far they gave me vertigo. So yeah; I took the case.

cute weathergirl on tv said there was a historic rainfall coming to the town, but i knew it could not put down the heat I was in

felt like a dog in the heat, but stuck in the middle of Chinatown

Why dont they make film noirs or neo-noirs anymore?

wojak noir.jpg - 640x368, 32.37K

Is there any market for that stuff in the modern west?

there was no one in the room

just the faint linger of cigarette smoke and the feline curves of a black revolver laying on the floor

They say that kittens have claws, but this one had a .45 and a bad attitude. This weren't no ordinary broad. But I ain't no ordinary gumshoe, so I guess it figures.

Because they’re never done well.
LA confidential got them interested again, but the black dahlia adaptation was so shit and bombed so bad they decided not to keep going. Also the new Marlowe movie sucked… so it’ll be at least 10 years before they try again.

but this one had a .45 and a bad attitude

Kek.

Who ever still owns the rights to it and Maltese Falcon and Thin Man should try to pump out an adaption soon. Get paid. Because it's going to fall into public domain soon. I think pretty much all his short stories already have.

Watched Gun Crazy and Narrow Passage this week. Both were really great underrated noirs for anyone who hasn’t seen either

narrow passage

*The Narrow Margin

Narrow Margin kind of reminds me of DOA, which is one of my favorite noir films. Both are brief and intense and take place in a handful of settings.

Trips checked. I haven’t seen that one yet, I’ll have to keep my eye out for it

Her legs went on for days. But those days were numbered.

I have barely watched any Noir films, besides L.A. Confidential.
And that one only stuck with me because it mindfucked me HARD.
Is there a list of mandatory must-have-watched noir movies?

Not that I know of. Do yourself a favour and watch a true classic, like Murder, My Sweet.

As far as the type of noirs that are “mandatory viewing” for the genre that I personally recommend: The Third Man, The Killing, and The Maltese Falcon. Those three are all great films and emblematic of the genre.

If you ever go through lists of “the greatest noirs ever made” or whatever you’ll often see people include Sunset Boulevard and Night of the Hunter. Both are classics and fabulous movies but I wouldn’t really call either a noir.

Read L.A. Confidential the novel. And then just keep on reading James Ellroy.

And yeh. Just google: 'best noirs list' or something and start watching. All the lists you'll find will be mostly the same.

They're noirs. They're not about hardboiled detectives. But, they're noir. Surely.

Agree to disagree

It was like walking into a gay bar with an open fly. Someone was going to blow... but who?

Damn, that’s a good one

woke girlboss protagonist

derpy himbo sidekick police officer

all the victims are innocent oppressed black lesbian latinx etc.

the killer/villain is a white man motivated by chauvanism

the script writes itself

does it have to have this sort of commentary to make it noir? or does any movie with a cynical detective character solving a mystery make it noir?

What’s it matter really? A good movie is a good movie. If people generally consider it a noir and it’s a good movie what’s the difference if it’s not technically a noir?

I heard from Max Payne

Moar

fuck. that one is so stupid lmao

When entertainment turns into a surreal reflection of your life, you're a lucky man if you can laugh at the joke. Luck and I weren't on speaking terms. Or maybe the place was just too lame to be funny.

ok based

With no way to deal with the past, I kept my eyes on the road, off the rear view mirror and the roadkill behind me. I chased lesser mysteries, other people's crimes.

Watched this the other night, loved it. Any other recs? Besides obvious ones like Double Indemnity or Scarlet Street

like a blind man at an orgy, i was gonna have to feel things out

the Jack Irish tv series, and movies are pretty good.

Farewell, My Lovely. From 1975 but I really liked it.

unironically only watched chinatown from this list, i dont think the long goodbye counts as a noir but i liked the marlowe character

i dont think the long goodbye counts as a noir

Nigger, that story is classic noir which is why it's been remade so many times over the years. It's almost like you don't know anything about noir or something.

It's too late. I've seen him grin like this while tap-dancing.

It's one of those stories that might feel unoriginal due to sheer amount of fillms that copied it (Yojimbo, Fistful of Dollars, Django, Last Man Standing)
The amount of times it was copied proves it is a good formula at least

If you want to see his final form go watch some of his TV stuff. He's just phoning it in like a 9-5 making shoes or something.

its true i dont know much about noir, i also watched blade runner and i dont know if that counts

:)

Of course, I knew the whole game was rigged from the start when I entered the casino. Only later would I learn that the man doing the rigging was a one armed bandit without a hand.

There's no hard rules no matter what anyone says. I'd consider Blade Runner neo noir. You could also consider Farewell, My lovely neo noir too if you want but being a golden age story with a golden age lead makes it a noir to me even if it's outside the generally accepted time frame for the label. I MAKE THE RULES IN MY HEAD lol.

you're just quoting max payne

The way I see it...There's two types o' people, those who spend their lives trying to build a future.....and those who spend their lives tryin' to rebuild the past. For too long I'd been stuck in between, hidden in the dark...What I was really doing here? With my cheap tobacco and even cheaper suit? Was I trying to make something right? Or was I just indulging myself? Countin' the minutes down til the big man came to collect? Maybe the two went hand in hand more than I'd care to admit....

as soon as i spoke to the broad i heard heavy footsteps behind me...the air reeked of stale grease and danger....''now that we got your attention''...i reached for my gun faster than i could turn around......''easy there, i just want to ask you a question''.....the large man smiled...''is coffee good for you''..

as one should, it's the preeminent yard stick for modern noir (as far as video games go anyway). they should have just gotten his VA instead of MAHK WABERG for the movie. he prob would have been a smidge too old though

Under the silver lake was the latest neo noir I can think of and it’s pretty average.
The Nice Guys was really good.

Yeah, I even lost my cat.
