they started to hint at a droid revolution at some points in the expanded universe, but I think George Lucas put a stop to that himself for some reason and it was basically forgotten after the prequels.
R2 and C3PO also had their expanded backstory nixed by him and it was way cooler.
They were both thousands of years old and had seen a lot of different historical events in the universe and both of them (mainly R2) had figured out how to avoid the memory wipes droids were subject to every 6 months.
