I think the reason The Shield is beloved dispute its flaws is because it pulls no punches narrative wise. Every other show with an anti-hero or some other popular but bastard character ends up softening them or giving them completely out of character redemption. While by the end of The Shield everyone Mackey has ever been close to is fucked one way or another by his actions.
I hope you really like repetition because it's a whole lot of Vic vs. Acaveda over and over and over and over and over again. Every episode of every season. They team up for ten minutes and then are back at each other's throats. Threat vs. counter threat. Not a show to be watched binge-style, as so many of you do it these days.

yep, the show having the courage of its convictions is a big part of what makes it so perennially valuable, all the more so because it manages this over so many episodes
I hope someone makes a video essay series worthy of it, in order to prod newer generations to watch
in particular I'd hope they'd show the masterful way in which the show uses dramatic irony, and (I marvel at how no one ever mentions this) how it presents a world with the impossibility of true forgiveness—consider how even Claudette's outburst at Dutch about his 'past indiscretions' near the end of the series suggests this, or Corinne's brilliant encapsulation of this idea as well as the iterated-prisoner's-dilemma that describes most behavior in the show: "I can make you miserable too."
Macabre Storytelling did a great video on The Shield and there used to be a channel posting nearly every Shield in existence but he got curbed by FX. FX wants people to forget about The Shield because of 2020's BLM/DEI insanity and because the show featured white cops beating the fuck out of noggers each episode and showing the nogs as masters of their own misery, not victims of the white man.

I genuinely believe this show would be more highly regarded if it wasn't for the opening credits song.
Tried watching it when it originally aired and would shut it off because of that song.
Fast forward to 2022 and my friend finally convinced me to watch and I watched the entire thing in a month. Still always had my thumb over the MUTE button before the credits.
The opening credits song and the Mall Metal music in the first season really makes the show seem more juvenile than it actually is and it throws people off and pushes them away.
