this always seemed to be a bit better than one tree hill and the OC in my book. i could not get through an entire episode of either. is it just the alium angle elevating it a bit beyond regular petty and annoying high school drama or was it a bit better written?

the showrunner on roswell was jason katims, who wrote on my so-called life which is the goat high school show so the writing has some quality
towards the end of season 1, ronald d moore (bsg, trek) took over so the silly sci-fi stuff became more pronounced

Yes, it is way too earnest and way too relationship focused (actual relationships, not the zoomer sanitized idea of tiktok armchair psychologist-approved relationships) for zoomers to like it. Additionally, it never really reveals the full scope of the alien plot because it focuses on the human side of things, and zoomers can't live without muh fully spelled out lore. It also lacks queer representation and brown characters (though Maria is Latina, but white Latina, which zoomers can't comprehend). Which is why the awful reboot made everyone brown and bisexual (not an exaggeration. It really did do that.)

Still, it's a great show precisely because of its earnestness. Katim still loves it. I've never seen anything that uses aliens, sci-fi and past lives as a framing device for human adolescence and growth. The third season loses the plot for a bit but I think the ending manages to stick the landing. The second is the coolest for the alien backstory. And the first is one of the best and most underrated seasons in genre TV.

IIRC 2 kids from different families that owned rival Pizza restaurants fall in love as kids, but get separated when they get older only to fall in love again when one of them returns to their home town. Pretty comfy romcom slop.

It was a last minute hail Mary to create a huge cliffhanger and have them renew the show for S3 (which failed so they had to go to a different network lol). I think the series finale did bring closure to her character but it was a waste to not continue to integrate her into the group and have her kean into her human side.

That said the Alex mystery episodes in late s2 are my favorite stretch of episodes in the show so I appreciate it even if the payoff for Tess was lacking.

S3 where Isabel cuts and dyes her hair and marries some puerto rican, Liz gets shipped off to boarding school and becomes and alcoholic, Maria's demo is turned into pop music, the sheriff sings at a bar and Max fucks Morgan Fairchild are a rough watch due to everything I just listed lol.

Sackhoff would have been a better Isabel imo. I know Heigl is supposed to be the standout but I always found her to be the weak link here even though Isabel tended to be the most relevant of the aliens plotwise.

They were trying to get a pilot based off their Michael/Maria chemistry off the ground for years. Barron and Toluca or something like that. I don't think they ever managed to pitch it. Ironic that they continue to hang into their Roswell glory days when both of them wanted the show to end so they'd be free to go into movies and singing respectively.

Same with the guy from Gilmore Girls. Some Buffy actors also do the same. It's kinda sad but zoomers and millennial moms eat that parasocial shit up

It wasn't even made for regular women, but rather for that very specific tumblr fujoushi shipper crowd. That's why the main couple in the remake wasn't Liz and Max, but rather the newly made up Michael and Alex whom the producer and the four fans the remake had still rave about because that's all the show really focused on.

Those are the two big reasons why S2 is my favorite.

It looked like a white oval disc with blue orbs surrounding parts of it. The blue orbs turned off and on in different intervals. Ww saw this while driving with a friend and he described it as the disc "making lights" at us. Very strange but I'm glad we got to see something like it.
