There is a good Batman film in here, being partially but not entirely smothered by unfitting garish comedy at odds with the introspective subplot of Bruce Wayne considering why he is Batman, whether he should continue being Batman and if he even has to right to stop. Most of this subplot is unfortunately cut from the final film including the resolution, but Val is excellent as Bruce Wayne. It's the first of the live action films to actually be interested in Bruce, even if it's muddled by the executive demand to make the film more family friendly after being spooked by the backlash to how dark and grim Batman Returns was despite being marketed to children.
People attack Schumacher for it because he was gay, as if that means he must have personally made everything camp and Batnipples, but that's silly because he had made entirely serious films like Falling Down, not just campier films like The Lost Boys, and in general he was a fine director who would have made a good successor to Burton's two films if he'd been allowed to. Batman & Robin had absolutely everyone involved on autopilot.
Val is really great in the film regardless.

I was on the fence about posting this because I might be revealing too much too private about other people. And I'm sure posting my photo on Anon Babble isn't a good idea, but here it is.
Years ago I did an internship at the Canned Film Festival. I fell in love with a girl there doing the same internship. A year later she moved to Los Angeles and I was still too chicken to tell her how I felt. Somehow she met Val and started dating him. (Please don't judge him for dating a much younger woman. She was very much an adult). This girl played me some of his voice messages, which were pretty funny. (Like, he would sneeze in the middle of leaving her message and act surprised and say, "What was that?"). Sometime after they broke up, I eventually attended his Citizen Twain show. It was hilarious and thought-provoking and he was completely immersed and brilliant in the part. I went in with some dumb immature idea of a confrontation ("I loved her first"), but all I could see was the very funny guy who had been in so many of my favorite movies growing up and beyond, from Willow to Top Gun to The Salton Sea. I couldn't express any bitterness towards him. Sometimes life seems very long and full of surprises. People can make an impression, however briefly, and leave you. Everyone does in the end. Val was my favorite Batman, and I remember this bit from 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader"
