Alex Garland is officially set to write and direct an ‘ELDEN RING’ movie for A24

What does an Elden Ring adaptation look like with an A24 budget?
deadline.com/2025/05/elden-ring-alex-garland-directing-a24-movie-1236408999/

A24 has now confirmed what’s been rumored for weeks — that Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action Elden Ring film for A24 and video game company Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.

This comes following the release of Warfare, his A24 Iraq war pic directed with Ray Mendoza, which has grossed over $32 million since opening last month. Peter Rice is set to produce alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.

Released to critical acclaim in February 2022, Elden Ring is an action RPG set in an authentic dark fantasy world, which allows players to head off on adventures within vast environments and dungeons. Created under the guidance of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game is based on a story written by Martin, author of the fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, which served as the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Didn't this hack say he will retire after Warfare?
Also, what an odd fucking choice, Garland does small scale sci-fi / thriller shit, even Civil War was a small scale movie. This is a huge ass fantasy film, completely different genre, scale, and aesthetic to what Garland does. Garland is all about slick modernistic visuals, Elden Ring is japanese graphomania.

Z E L DA

Do that first, or do you got the rights. Metroid then

Is the Tolkien estate strapped for cash?

I like Alex Garland but why?

I think he said recently that he didn't do anything in that game

28 Weeks Later gives him post-apocalypse experience I guess.

entire movie is someone reading item descriptions

based

"to"

"in the future"

Not happening.
Fagot media speak.

Let's fucking go.

Trades wouldn't be reporting on this if it wasn't happening

Elden Ring is a massively feminist world.

Like, the game/lore implies that no man has been intelligent enough to see the moon.

so what?

I'm glad he didn't. This dude did Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War and Warfare. He also wrote Sunshine, 28 Days Later and Never Let Me Go. He's unironically the perfect choice for Elden Ring.

No, Azur and Lusat definitely saw the moon and past it. It’s not even a matter of seeing, it’s just that the moon is the closest celestial object to the Earth so it gets special reverence.

Newsflash: The moon is foidcoded.

I love that game

Based. It's uber edgy retarded shit but very fun. Soundtrack's great too.

Z E L DA

It's called L E G E N D.

Metroid then

Metroid's hard to do. Much harder than Elden Ring or Zelda.

I really, REALLY hope it's about the family and Marika breaking the ring. I hope The Tarnished shows up in the last thirty seconds. I hope there is no fighting and just demigods yelling at each other. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams. I hope.

um....uh...you guys DID beat her without shield/summons/magic, right?

file.png - 834x596, 744.14K

I hope everyone part of this production gets AIDS.

I wonder how they’ll adapt the weird sizes of different characters. Maybe everyone will be human size?
We don’t know what the story of the adaptation is focusing on.
How so

based on those movies how did you come the conclusion that he would be good for elden ring?

Knows VFX, knows worldbuilding, knows ambience, has worked with both technological and fantastical Sci-Fi, knows how to do horror and violence and knows visual storytelling. He's probably the best choice for this and miles better than someone like Eggers or Snyder.

Watch Dredd and Annihilation and tell me again you don't see it.

games story is basically impossible to understand

gameplay is extremely open and the game is very long with a lot of spectacle

a24 doesn't have that much money to spend

Hopefully this dies quietly and no one ever talks about it again.
Unless they're trying to make a Mario movie or Minecraft movie type self-aware parody of this, it is going to fail badly.

All it will take to kill the movie is a single American accent.

How so

female action hero

very high budget requirement

colorful Sci-Fantasy setting but also horror

Only things I can think of that sort of resemble it are Iria: Zeiram the Animation and Valerian. Pulling off Metroid well ain't easy.

rennala is the smartest woman alive

gets pumped and dumped and mindbroken by marika's gigolo alter ego

why couldnt they just make an anime of the road to the erdtree manga? Fuck this cynical hollywood cashgrab.

An anime is the only way to do this right.
Give it to Madhouse.

My current favorite director making a dark souls movie?

Take my money.

Oh, and watch Sunshine too. There's already plenty apocalyptic royal court drama in there.

female action hero

Should be fine but probably lacks appeal

very high budget requirement

This makes a lot of sense. Would need Avatar like budget with all the alien environments

I........AM TARNISHED

a24

DOA

Low a24 budget should be a good thing, a decent amount of people will watch because of the name so easy profits.

You are a drone

deflects all your god-like spells and incantations

Heh, shoulda paid the 10 rune tax

123143421243.png - 375x211, 107.76K

It's the mixture of both. Female action heroes at that high a budget aren't a thing except for Captain Marvel (which only made money because it was an Avengers tie-in and the second one that wasn't bombed) and Black Widow) which bombed).

Its a24 so the entire movie will be wide shots in empty fields and closeups because they cant afford to build any sets. A24 is a comically terrible choice

The problem is if he leans too far into horror and grimdark. Souls games usually have a beauty and goofiness to them that imitations fail to capture and Alex Garland might make the same mistake.

The game is extremely flashy.

I'm ready for a24 to go bankrupt. What a terrible company

What does an Elden Ring adaptation look like with an A24 budget?

In the Lost Lands cost 55 million dollars, and was based on a George R.R. Martin story with direct involvement from Martin, who greatly approved of the final product.

Do not be surprised if there are weird parallels between this movie and the Elden Ring film.

Refute what I said. If it needs mentioning, he's also done post apocalyptic stuff with 28 Days Later and slow bodily deterioration stuff with Never Let Me Go. Everything added up, he's perfect.
He's also made Men...

what type of faggot cares about this shit honestly, capeslop and videogameslop combined to make the perfect product for the regular millenial neckbearded who “Looooves cinema” and probably wastes all of his money buying colector editions and probably cares for console wars and shit
its unironically the worst type of slop in cinema, its like whoa elden ring of course… great story and game lets make something that will really be cinema, we are not capeslop and franchise bullshit we are elevated look at us making real moovies
its like someone telling what to like its the worst shit ever, at least capeslop enjoyers are half-conscious about it

ogro.png - 551x668, 185.86K

Alex Garland is a reluctant genius of a director who hates directing but only does it because he's too much of a sperg to let somebody fuck up his vision. He would rather write and produce and only directs out of necessity. Fortunately he's so much of a genius he's better than 99% of directors out there who actually want to do the job.

This but unironically.

see

A lot of Elden Ring comprises open spaces with a one or two main colours (red for caelid, orange in altus, violet underground) but then again they need to show these massive cities and pompous buildings.
Corps think it’s easy money

Yo Tone, you won't believe this shit...

You're some tasteless moron, so I don't give a fuck.

how do you even make a movie out of this elden ring is its gameplay the rest is just make believe schizo ramblings of youtube lore clickbaiter
i wonder if he just said ok because he thinks its the average lord of the rings clone lmao

I don't think GRRM had anything to do with Elden Ring beyond the most early concept work.
The game is 95% identical to all prior Souls games in writing.

sex with ranni

Garland wishes he was half the director Anderson is lol

Elden Ring is a massively feminist world.

Perfect for Garland then. He's a giga-simp.

what an answer
thats like textbook basic bitch answer
are you brit?

Garland's track record is much better than Anderson's.

alex garland

What?
Get him doing more scifi for god's sake.
There's too much of this tolkien fantasy crap already. And as flawes as Garland's stuff may be, he's the only person on the planet attempting real scifi anymore.

You didn't say anything too substantial or ask a question. So it's really an answer in that sense.

He is good with thematics without hitting people over the head, which the souls series heavily realies on.
But man i'm so fucking sick of generic fantasy, and it's a waste to have Garland NOT working on scifi.

Doubtful. Watch Warfare and tell me Garland gives a shit about that. Maybe the studio pushes for names but I doubt they will be that big.

Low a24 budget should be a good thing

Elden Ring, The Game, has enormous, impressive environments.
And the action/combat is shounen anime tier.

You'd need an ENORMOUS fucking budget to adapt it to a film and even remotely do it justice.

Moon is a metaphor for a white women butt, primeval current is sperm shooting from a comet Azur and Lusat both saw it and became rock hard.

Dark Souls walked so Elden Ring could run. This should have been a Souls movie not only because it deserves it more but because it would be easier to do with a low budget and has more interesting narrative beats.

Dredd cost 35 million. Annihilation cost around 50. Civil War too. I'd expect them to go with around 100 for Elden Ring. That should be fine.

What does an Elden Ring adaptation look like with an A24 budget?

Niggers, niggers everywhere.

Annihilation cost around 50

And looked like 200

Elden Ring is a massively feminist world.

The world literally got ruined because Marika is a fucking BPD femoid

Marika.jpg - 3840x2160, 431.96K

I can't think of a worse company to be making it

I wouldn't go that far. It looks exactly how a 50 million dollar movie with Z list actors would look like.

Easy when most of the film is people walking slowly through woodland or an old school gym.
Much harder too look good when you're having to deal with fight scenes.
She did literally nothing wrong.

Why not shut that whore mouth? There's shit leaking.
No. It's excellent. Go watch the Stallone slop if you want cartoon aesthetics.

The Elden Ring game probably cost 100 mil.
The film would have to be more than that.

A24

So how are they going to turn Elden Ring into a “White people are so weird” movie?

If the Tarnished is brown it solves itself for them.
Maybe that one dude from the Green Knight? He'd be pretty good.

First we Elden, then we Ring.
LET’S ELDEN RING

Unlikely. They recycle so much shit and it's not a big studio either. They also only recently started paying their staff better.

With the movie it heavily depends on where the focus lies, obviously.

Isn't that basically already the game though?

shields

I thought shields were bad against her since she heals on hit, doesnt matter if it gets blocked

who's gonna play the albinauric woman?

is godfrey even white? nepheli, her descendant is brown

too old

Miquella is cuter

no he is not, he looks fucking deformed

He looks pretty white, he most likely fucked some brown chick when he was sent away to the badlands by Marika

These games are almost completely bereft of narrative, how are you supposed to make a movie about them?

How is that gonna work? The whole point of the story is disparate pieces of lore that only make sense if you look up a video made by an autist on youtube

Miquella is a tranny and Malenia is black

Doesn’t work on the moon sadly.

These games are almost completely bereft of narrative

i never understood this, yeah, the worldbuilding is told through item descriptions, weird npc, etc, but the main story is pretty straightforward

Weird. When he talked about games before he said Dark Souls couldn't work.

No, I beat her and every other boss with arcane/bleed and by letting mimic tear do 90% of the work.

Elden Ring is only difficult if you allow it to be.

can block destined death

cant block miniature moon

shame

It will be another Green Knight.

“Glintstone sorcery is the study of the stars, and the life therein”. There’s something in the moon that Rennala saw. Something of a patron, perhaps. That it costs more intelligence doesn’t actually mean she’s the smartest person. It’s just a minimum.

I know From always had gender-bending and other weird shit, but how pozzed will this be?

That's better fit for a TV series focusing on the characters and different factions though. It doesn't work for a 2 hour movie.

Watch Dredd and Annihilation and tell me again you don't see it.

They are both god awful. But he's also made kino. Biggest problem is Elden Ring has no story and retarded world building, so he's going to be ice skating uphill.

*godrick cuts his own arm off and uses the stump to graft a dragons head to it*
Queen Latifa: Oooo heeaaaaaeeell no

Their gender-bending is tasteful because it feels fantastical and rooted in strange medieval cultural traditions

It just shows that Miyazaki has a favoritism problem.

They are both god awful.

I totally disagree.
Biggest problem is Elden Ring has no story and retarded world building, so he's going to be ice skating uphill.
Not really. It could be perfectly fine as a mood piece with a bit of melodrama.

mood piece

Into the trash it goes

staring at the moon takes up more intelligence than staring into deepest space

the moon is more important than the fucking galaxy / primeval current

the stars can just be stopped

BRAVO MIYAZAKI

Another shit opinion from you.

For me it's Rya.

I killed her because I loved her.

gets depression

kills her instead of letting her discover the world for the first time in her life

not very based of you rankeesh

How hard are they going to try to make you sympathize with clearly jew-coded LITERAL JEW DEMON worshipping nomadic merchants that are being genocided for their heretic beliefs and have a literal holocaust pit where they buried them alive?
youtu.be/M62pYatbyHo?si=9HwL9OdMDpeJuGDX

It's going to be A24 so he's probably correct. Expect a very slow arthouse video game movie. Though honestly that might be the best option for a FromSoft game.

Will likely be a prequel to the game, IIRC Martin wrote the origin of the world but not the things that happen in the game

It's going to look so cheap. There's absolutely no chance a24 can put together an appropriate production for a setting like that

What are the chances it's not about the game but rather a prequel movie?

They removed this guy's sidequest because the parallels to Jews becoming filled with violent world-hating vengeance after they were holocausted were too obvious. Very prescient and artful.

the merchants only turned into the frenzied flame after they got falsely accused by shabiri and thrown into a hole shabiri is a jew demon

Dredd

god awful

oh, (You)!

I’d really like to know -how- they can resist the frenzied flame, and WHY they decided to cut out the frenzied merchant questline from the game, sigh. The frenzied merchants underground appear to be maddened, but the ones on the surface appear to be fine.

discover the world

There wouldn't be a world to discover before long.

Rise of Marika btfo’ing the Hornsent and getting with Godfrey, taking out the fire giants, becoming Goddess. Rennala changing up Liurnian politics and ousting the mad science death cult, becoming wizard queen.

Moon is a masculine noun in German checkmate.

Because the ones on the surface were the rare ones that managed to resist and as a result actually can survive on the surface without going insane?
That or they're the ones that never used the frenzied flame much, and only go "fuck it" when you try to kill them

who will play the nefarious poo poo man?

I'm looking forward to it. With Garland at the helm it will be kino. But at the same time I am 100 percent aware that this was only greenlit with its required higher than normal for A24 budget because of Nolan's Odyssey. They are banking on The Odyssey creating a sort of gold rush appetite for more in the auteur sword and sorcery genre. And they would be absolutely right.

merchants were innocent until they got falsely accused by a literal jew demon and thrown into a hole to die, the despair from this made them summon/join the frenzied flame

could also be about the Shattering, but either works plenty fine as a movie

If it's about the rise of Marika, Godfrey himself actually would make a pretty good protagonist, instead of Marika herself

The moon is masculine (the sun is feminine) in Japan, but this is often the reverse in the west, but not always. The foremost god of magic, or divine patron of western esotericism, is a moon (and later sun) god. Western/Hermetic wizardry had symbolized operation of all the celestial bodies.

The moon is masculine (the sun is feminine) in Japan,

thats literally a lie, shut the fuck up

Ok, but the important question is whose feet will be on display?

Elden Ring made way more money than Dark Souls ever did.
That changes things.

The goofiness in souls games is not intentional, its the result of the Japanese being a goofy fucking people.

Exactly. It's not because of some California-driven agenda.

That would probably be the only way to make a coherent film.
Pre-shattering drama about the royal family.

— In Japanese mythology and the early Japanese women's movement, the sun is often associated with women. The Sun Goddess, Amaterasu, is a central deity in Shinto, and the Japanese imperial family claims descent from her. Pioneer Japanese feminist Hiratsuka Raichō also referenced the sun as a metaphor for women, stating "In the beginning, woman was the sun," according to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

could also be about the shattering itself
or if they want to go really full original, movie about Marika prior to becoming a God

Pioneer Japanese feminist

Opinion discarded.

Yes it’s cringe I’m just saying there’s myth and history to it. The moon is male in Japan.

Armie Hammer

Vyke would be cool

... is it going to be about being a janny who arrives to CLEAN IT UP after a cataclysmic off-screen war that rendered the settings' deities half-crippled and half-conscious, like the actual games, or is it going to be a movie about the cataclysmic off-screen war when all the deities were at their peak?

can you tell i'm getting tired of playing medieval janny in these games, and that i'd REALLY like to participate in the cataclysm for a change?

How will it work? Everything is super fantastical compared to usual fantasy stuff.

MORE LIKE GELDEN RING
Because only trannies play this game.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go start my 83rd Baldur's Gate 2 character.

don't forget to equip the belt of femininity sister

How High can I get so I can

Different anon jumping in here. Learning that the sun is feminine and the moon is masculine in German made me do some research a while back, because it seems bizarre. The concepts of masculinity and femininity are extremely complex and varied, almost infinite. All the Greek and Roman gods are combinations of masculine and feminine qualities, war being masculine, but victory being feminine for example. With the sun and moon, it's not that the sun has "feminine energy" or whatever, it's that the sun, like a mother, is always there. Whereas the moon, like a father, is sometimes here and sometimes not.

Whereas we in the West recognize the masculine projection of energy as the defining aspect of the sun, and the mysterious, demure nature of the moon as feminine.

there's also a factor that mythology doesn't spring up out of nowhere and a lot of Greek gods are the male versions of older female gods due to their more patriarchal society

Like Hades is in fact the younger god of him and Persephone who in older cultures was the sole death deity and Hades likely a minor deity that got elevated

oooooooo elden ring

I knew it wouldn't happen. But I had hoped for at least one thing I liked followed up on in the DLC. Absolutely nothing I cared about was touched on there. And that just sucks.

buddy comic with her and jar bairn on a grand trip when?

Yes, a lot of feminine deities became masculine during the shift from nomadic to pastoral and agricultural society. And you're right, the really strange stories around gods and goddesses (like gods being birthed from parts of other gods) is the extremely distilled story of that culture's change over time. You probably know this but I'm telling it to the anons here: usually a tale of a war between different pantheons (Titans versus Olympians etc) is the story of how two cultures clashed in a significant way, and the victors destroying AND absorbing/incorporating the defeated culture's gods into their own myths.

Like the Titans were the gods of some ancient, unknown culture that was wiped out and assimilated probably thousands of years before the Greeks as we know them came to dominate the Aegean peninsula.

By making Aseo the protagonist.

and occasionally you get these weird remnant figures that just don't "fit" with the established mythology well, but then that outsider status actually makes them stand out and become part of the mythology as outsider
often trickster, death or time deities seem to fit this

Never ever. But here's Radahn again cause everyone was dying for that. At least that's what I've been told I never saw any evidence to support it.

He's a huge fan of FromSoft. His show DEVS even has a dude playing Dark Souls 2.

live action

Fucking why? Let Ghibli do it so it won't be blue-tinted trash like everything else these days

same except gargoyle's greatsword

Is it possible to learn this power?

yes, that's what the Dung Eater's ending is about, you learn his power then do it to everyone

Road to the erdtree

No. It would just be a generic jap comedy anime just with a elden ring skin

an Elden Ring flick is gonna drop before I've even cracked open the DLC

Finish what, the series? I honestly never read Soldier of Sidon. I was satisfied with the ending of Arete.

that's so fucked. i liked lobster chef guy. ;-;

Boring. I'd rather have an Eggers' directed Bloodborne film.

well good news: you can just kill the dung eater before he kills chef guy

you must be actually retarded if you think they are adapting the story of the game, like when you hear about movie you go right away to thinking they are making movie about mute guy rolling around bosses and collecting loot.
they can:
A) adapt something from the lore/history of the world.
B) adapt story of one of the npcs/bosses
C) create their own story taking place in the game world that is too small to impact the things happening in game story
Your imagination for hypothetical scenarios is so bad that you must be black, 15 years old, indian, adult playing videogames or Anon Babbletard - or all of those combined.

The moon is feminine and the sun is masculine, this game is filled with symbolism, Miazaki is injecting the occult/esoteric things he learned in his masonic lodge.

The Sun and the Moon in alchemy: two principles derived from the One-the-All.
The One-the-All self-creates, self-fertilizes, self-transforms, self-dissolves, and self-dominates. It is "the Father and the Son of itself."

The sun barely does anything in ER except be represented by lightning and the fell god’s miniature sun.

Maybe it represents gold, and the moon silver, something like that.
Theres alot of influence from alchemy, hermetism and many mythologic stuff too, it is all linked.
The duality aspect is vastely represented too.

Imagine the smell
