George could never settle on what the deal with Sheev's face was. In AOTC the obvious implication was that he was physically degrading from the Dark Side, but then George wrote this scene and swept his AOTC appearance under the rug. And his brown little fanboys on our board lap this slop up.
Lucas originally meant for him to look much older by the end of the trilogy, meant to be well on the way to looking the way he did in ROTJ. McDiarmid has aging makeup on in AOTC for this reason. But then he changed his mind and suddenly in ROTS there's no aging makeup on and he just somehow gets older from lightning which it has never done before or since.
Needs the movie to pause for 5 minutes so George Lucas can come out and explain in scientific detail why things are happening. Meanwhile high iq intellectuals like me understand completely just from visuals.

It completely muddled it and for no reason, the fact that he was already old made it very easy to just depict him halfway to how he looks in Return, and make it clear he's much older than he pretends and is sustained by the Dark Side.

I just don't get how he puts so much passion and effort into his movies but then goes "eh whatever lets just do this who cares" with some random, pretty significant and visible things.
