So has this movie effectively just catapulted Final Destination into the GOAT bracket of horror franchises suddenly?

FD5 was a huge return to form, but this one probably just edges it. I don't think there's many horror IPs where 5/6 of the films are this strong.

I think they've started to get the casting down pat. Not perfect yet (didn't think the lead in this one was thaaat good) but they seem to be matching an assortment of young, hot fresh faces with experienced television actors. Richard Harmon hard carried a lot of this movie for example. In FD5 you had Nicholas D'Agosto in a similar position along with David Koechner who was actually kinda miscast, but is the right profile still... they should build the cast like this moving forward. 30-50% tv actors that will give a good performance. The rest are hotties that are given their break in a horror movie.

Simply speaking, I think a movie will always be better if the cast give their all and have good chemistry. Especially horror movies. I also think a movie will be better if it knows what it is / wants to be and plays to its strengths. Easier with horror movies. So to answer your question, a bit of column A and a bit of column B. Going too far in either direction won't help.

The Tom Cruise actor in the last movie was a great choice for example. Never seen him in anything else before or after, but he obviously gave it his all. Same for Erik here. Or Stifler and Carter in the first one. They don't need to necessarily have "star power" like Devon did, they just need to put in good performances and people will respond. That's ironically how stars are born. Casting Chris Rocks just end up with phone-it-in performances for me.

Stefanie had intervened by informing the family and establishing the rules, allowing for them to skip their deaths - this is how the characters in the original movies manage to avoid death too when it's their turn, it's the ones who do not know the rules that just get killed off immediately. So when Erik is in the tattoo parlour he changes the song throwing Death's plan off and then manages to actually survive death because he's semi-aware that he's being targeted. So that bumps him to the bottom of the list. Remember the list order is : Erik, Julie, Bobby, Darlene, Stefanie, Lil Bro. So Julie's next. That's easy to follow. Next up is Bobby, this is where the movie gets a bit smarter (because the characters are wrong and lose track of the list order due to extra information they possess about Erik). Erik saves Bobby next. He takes the peanut butter out of the RV. It's dumb but it actually is firmly established this would have killed Bobby. So Bobby skip. Now he's bottom of the list. And this is where the movie gets really fun because you're thinking either does the list restart within Erik's family (so Erik is at the top again) or does it go to Darlene. The answer is the movie supports both, making the lore a bit more open ended and fun. Darlene, Stefanie and Lil Bro are all saved before the next death. I'm hitting character limit so will spoiler text the moments they're "saved" in my next post

I meant that his prior knowledge of death’s nature and the other main characters from staying in contact with schizo Iris since childhood explains his character enough to me. I think it's safe to assume it simply couldn't. They made the house out to literally be an impenetrable Deathproof fortress, that only gave Death small windows when external factors were at play (Stefani visiting, drugs coming in the mail etc..). During those times the movie established that Iris was ever vigilant and hard to get one past. In fact, we actually do see Death try to splode the house when Stef is initially there and Iris stops it from happening.
