Girls don't "get" movies.

Well frankly I first had a thought similar to this when I saw a turning point USA flyer years ago with a photo of a Cuban man with his wife and daughter in a ramshackle kitchen full of utensils, pots and pans, and a couple hot plates. The caption was something like “blah blah communism blah blah living like this sucks,” but what struck me was the man was clearly happy. He had a wife. He had a child. He was smiling. I couldn’t help but wonder what he’d have to say if he found out this family photo was being scattered across college campuses to berate him and his life as a lesser lot, something that should be feared and used to inform political decisions.
Not to fetishize poverty and not a particular defense of the Cuban government, more just how we perceive happiness and what our fears of becoming “lesser” say about us. Obviously being poor can cost people their health, time, and sanity, but I just didn’t understand why a best case scenario of living poor was being demonized.

I do think the tangibility of one’s direct labor has a significant correlation to happiness or at the very least worth. This doesn’t mean physical labor necessarily, since there are many forms of physical labor that feel (or are) pointless. But there’s something about desk work where at its worst you can’t even say you’re getting a workout.
I remember in college I had a job as a “supplemental instructor” (basically an official tutor), and no one showed up to my sessions unless it was the day before a test. I was still required to submit study materials I had designed 3 times a week for my 3 hour long sessions to show I was actually putting in the work to prepare for students that never showed up. All fine and good, but putting the work into designing worksheets and presentations knowing they’d never be used was maddening. Pretty much the only time the job was any amount of enjoyable was before tests when everyone showed up, and even then it was frustrating when these frantic freshmen would never show up otherwise even if it helped them. I ended up quitting halfway through the semester out of annoyance, and then the professor for the course quit, which made me feel worse since the students probably definitely felt they’d been ditched then. But I probably would have stuck it out if even one student showed up or I wasn’t forced to make busywork assignments that wouldn’t get used.

I have had similar experiences, and no one who hasn’t had to do the equivalent of TPS reports (or unused study guides, as the case may be) can ever truly appreciate how detached our system has become from reality. It’s unsustainable

For another fun story- when I worked survey, we had to fill out TPS forms in situ after every single 100m mark on a transect. Then we had to spend the rest of the day post-survey transcribing all the forms done digitally on to paper. Even though we could be in a 5km stretch with no noticeable changes in soil profile or landform, we weren’t permitted to copy any fields. It all had to be manually done. We’d also have a guy in the office whose job was to watch us do the forms live and call or text us while we were in the middle of the field to tell us if we made an error. Instead of just… fixing the error. Which he could do because he had full access to the forms. I’d get called mid-trek through a marsh, calf deep in mud and this guy would be calling me about how I accidentally marked B-186 as B-185. I get that QA QC is important but we would’ve saved a crazy amount of time not doing all that nonsense.
