How do you refute this?
How do you refute this?
They're both shit.

The problem with the Star Wars movie is that every interesting idea it brings up goes nowhere because they need to reset the status quo by the end of the movie anyway so whatever interesting subversion they could pull fall flat and you just end up with grumpy Luke Skywalker and Mary Sue. It legitimate would have been more interesting if Rey and Kylo just teamed up to start something new unrelated to the Sith and the Rebellion. Pic related pulls of Star Wars subversion much better and did so like over a decade before.
fpbp
heh you expected a movie that isnt terrible, I subverted your expectations!
reset to status quo
but they didnt do that, they killed reys lineage
interesting subversion
playing opposites on what people like about star was is hardly interesting. it was a gimmick at best
they're not really comparable at all. I don't have to refute an argument that's made in bad faith.
you're comparing new star wars with some old anime and claiming one being japanese makes up the difference
really?
People who use basedjaks are genuine retards, look at there shooters manifesto it's literally reads like it was written by a man with severe brain damage.

It's worse, they're redditards

You mean "my twisted world"?
Im convinced basedjacks are the new rage comics at this point. Unrelated theyve always made me irrationally angry
stars wars is not a genre
imo KOTOR1 was already subversive enough, with a Vader stand-in playing the good guy while everyone gets to talk shit about him throughout the story until the tweest is revealed.
Even more subversive if you play as a female, and imo the best way to play K1. The gender canon for both games should be reversed; they fit their stories better that way.
How does eoe subvert your expectations? It's not like eva was some bog standard mecha show, especially in the second half. None of the weird visuals are out of the ordinary (just larger in scale at best) and the parts that are abstract representation of characters thoughts and feelings was also already common in the show. If anything it's the complete opposite and episode 25 and 26 subvert your expectations while eoe more like what people expected the end of the show to be like.
OP BTFO
The last two episodes of EoE were a subversion of expectations
EoE was a fulfillment of expectations
damn mutts will end up dying while being hated by everyone and bullying japan for no reason
yeah exactly the baggage with atris and the lingering repressed feelings/maybe affair is the best and most poignant part of that game.
FPBP
Even as a psudeo-intellectual teenager I realised that eva is retarded
dumb question, subverting expectations doesn't immediately mean something is good and thats not the sole reason NGE is great, there are numerous factors to each subversive media that defines the quality, Game of Thrones is one that is pretty widely praised but at a certain point it becomes evil wins again and again which loses its subversive quality
Chris Abalone getting mad that Phantom Menace talked about a prophecy and blasting unavoidable Phil 101 drivel all over Star Wars while also throwing utterly cliche corny shit is not a good subversion, it's just him jacking off in front of a captive audience like always. Credit for not saying deconstruction though.

I still don't understand how "subversion of expectations" became the internet meme phrase associated with TLJ
Like all three middle trilogy movies (Empire, Clones, TLJ) make a point of subverting stuff but TLJ was easily the least subversive of the three.
Trvke
Subvert expectations 30 years ago
its new and interesting
People praise it
Subvert expectations today
its the same shit everyone else has been doing for 15 years
People hate it
both are plonked
They were both incredibly shitty movies. End of Evangelion is just better because they gave people what they had been asking for the entire fucking series by letting her go near full synchro with Unit-2 before getting roflstomped back to the hour of entry level philosophy bullshit the movie throws at you. Last Jedi didn't even give people what they wanted for 5 minutes.
look at there shooters manifesto
Who
It was a huge fuck you to the fanbase that was expecting some big budget final battle for the climax (which also didn't happen in the show).
Asuka gets EATEN during the final battle and most of the movie is a procession of weird visuals and going meta, even including shots of the audience in theaters.
Dobson is that you
25 and 26 were subversive, the movie was made to appease the midwits who didn't get the tv ending
inb4 muh budget
It's still a better ending to the story than EoE
I think so too
Eva has always been shit
bad movie
good movie
Just because something is "subversive ", doesn't meant it's well written or enjoyable
expecting some big budget final battle for the climax
you mean the movie that has one of the best animated fight scenes ever?
its the same ending
TLJ actually met my expectations of what a star wars movie is supposed to be
One leaves me feeling satisfied and the other makes me feel like someone is intentionally trying to piss me off.
theres no way the TV ending leaves you satisfied while EoE pisses you off.
And yet...
rey being a mind-wiped sith by luke and turning to the light would have been fine for the new trilogy. then you have a secret sith that's part of the main good guys cast who is only revealed to be bad in part 3, who is behind it all. kylo unknowingly working for him through snoke (snoke being the apprentice of the unknown sith, but said sith wants rey). basically a mix of kotor 1 + 2.
this is how i would have done it anyway.
The color red aside, how do they even compare? The Japanese one is psychologically sound and feels like a fever dream because of its abstract imagery and dramaturgical brilliance, while the American one is a poorly written turd that also feels like a fever dream but only because Rian was eager to cram in as much retarded Spaceballs shit as he could.
2 unrelated things, but made into butthurt over japan
EOE
Subversion of expectations
What the fuck are you talking about? Did you even watch it?
its the same ending
They're the exact opposite endings, in the show Shinji accepts human instrumentality, in EOE he rejects it. That's why the ending of the show is way more depressing despite being happier on its face.
I mean EVA's ending(s) got widely panned so I dunno what you're on about.
The Last Jedi will always be garbage no matter what, but I haven't seen EOE (only the anime series) so I can't make any judgement on it.
EOE is good. The Last Jedi is garbage and not even so much because of the story but because of its incompetent execution and tonal diarrhea.
most of the stuff from Japan have lots of passion and effort put into them, unlike any western crap from the last 15 years
I’m just gonna cover all my bases, and say I hate them all. That’ll make me look smart and “above it all”, right?
This. Anno was fine leaving it at the end of the series, EoE was him giving people what they wanted after getting death threats and shit.
You’re so fuck unique and cool, guy.
EOE is good.
Thanks for the recommendation, will watch.
The Last Jedi is garbage and not even so much because of the story but because of its incompetent execution and tonal diarrhea.
As far as I'm concerned, The Last Jedi is garbage NOT because it subverts expectations but because it underwhelms expectations. Good movies exceed expectations, whether they include subversion or not.
This.

tranny
Subversion isn't an issue if done well and deconstruction isn't either if you manage to correctly reconstruct.
youre a weeb faggot tranny
Do you realize that these pathetic imitations of schoolyard bullying attempts only make people see you as an impotent loser?
I wholeheartedly agree with you. In fact, skillfully written subversion/deconstruction/reconstruction keeps stories interesting and unpredictable.
Exactly. When everyone is subverting expectations, no-one is subverting expectations.
kek'd and check'd
You are comparing a terrible sequel made as leftist propaganda and resulting from a dispute of two terrible directors to the real end of a japanese animated show. These things have nothing to do with each others.
One is bad movie that is bad + subverts expectations
Another is good movie that is good + subverts expectations
evangelion doesn't have expectations to subvert. star wars had forty years of expectations to hold up to.
