Why this movie is so beloved on the internet? Every actor sucks there, Vin is cringe cool as Riddick, the production is weird (it has cheap scene props, but on the other hand there is lots of cgi, which is rich for a 2000s movie), and the camerawork is so fucking nauseating. All these janky medium and close up shots makes it hard to follow whats going on. Also, for some reason the movie drags alot. Things are happening, but it feels like barely anything has happened. Its unreal.
Pitch Black (2000)
I was watching some youtuber's essay of the whole series recently who's name I've already forgotten and could've sworn I saw Claudia Black in a handful of the clips he used when talking about Pitch Black. That's neat, didn't remember her being in it at all if she was.
It's a human thing, you wouldn't get it.
It's a B movie. David Twahoy or whatever his name is basically wrote an Aliens survival movie with Vin's D&D character played by himself
The movie makes a lot more sense when you understand this
I like chronicles of riddick a lot more, mostly because I love the b movie tier macbeth knockoff subplot of Vaakos wife trying to snake him into betraying his king so they can take power over the necromongers. The lore of the world is cool, and we should have had 10 of these movies instead of fast and furious movies
I get that it tries to be uncoventional in the most immature way (the villain of the movie is the saviour, the guy who looks like the protagonist is a bad guy, there are allakhu akbar retards in it etc) but it falls apart on every technical level. It has some good scenes in it, but this is as my praises goes for this movie
So it was not a well thought low budget project, and was made for shits and giggles, but since it was successful in box office, they decided to make more sequels. It does make more sense with that info, but the movie still sucks
You're right. The F&F movies are so bland and forgettable after 3 I can't even tell them apart at this point. Vin should have made more sci-fi/fantasy movies back in his younger days
chronicles is fucking insanely good for what is objectively a stupid, cliche movie. fucking love it
It's a vehicle for Vins chaotic neutral rogue assassin D&D character. If you're thinking beyond that, you're on the wrong track
Im thinking as a clueless guy who wants to see a movie. I didnt know it was made exclusively for Vin and his D&D friends
In order to appreciate the movie, you have to have had a character in your imagination thats an exaggeratedly edgy badass that you imagined being set to nu metal music. If you've never had that experience in your mind you won't get it
Sorry to hear you got filtered.
I really wish we got more scifi movies like Pitch Black. Just a small movie that somebody wanted to make.
I often think about the ridiculous shit we could have had with a 10 movie Riddick series, the stupid ass characters the Rock and Jason Statham would have been playing in it. We would have had it all
Dude ignore all the technical problems and enjoy another man's low budget fantasy.
Look, I get what they were going for, but I know lots of low budget movies that have decent direction and you can follow whats going on, like the beyond the infinite two minutes movie
For how cliche and stupid it is, I appreciate that it's original lore and world building, not based on any book or comic or anything else, just pure early 2000s b tier science fiction for the love of the genre. It's the same reason I still like the Underworld movies.
I like shlocky movies
Riddick is great shlocky fun
Its a rather unique, well made non american big, but independent movie, with not all generic american actors and riddick himself is a cool character. Has a great setting, premise and pay off. It is a solid movie.
If you also look at the media around that time you can see what it was contending with.
I remember this being talked about a lot as a kid, I was 15 when it released so it was directly aimed at kids my age too.
It is a good movie and riddick is a great character, they just mishandles the character and IP and have made it rather disjointed when it could have been really big. Though vin deisel has F&F to do and fall back on so while he cares about the character, it is not the big money maker for him.
If I remember correctly this released around the time of the perfect storm, one of the biggest movies of the year where normies would go and watch perfect storm (I watched it too) and this was bootlegged and passed around on DVD
Riddick is a character thats supposed to appeal to the inside part of you that was manifested when you were a teenager, listening to metal and imagining yourself as an unstoppable morally dark anti hero who's cooler than everyone else that intimidates your enemies. Thinking about anything technical is missing the point
Cronicles has moreissues with it than the other 2 movies. Especially when you watch the extra scene version.
It is essentially 3 movies wrapped into one and because of it, it feels disjointed.
The entire part with the imam is shit, the necromongers part is the best but the prison part would have made a better movie.
Then the ending is super fucking rushed it does not make sense at all.
The kill of the girl, the necro leader, character assassinate falco and get the other guy (furyan) to an hero for no reason all within a few minutes. Its a fucking messy ending.
It's cool, so it doesnt matter that much. You're thinking about it in a too technical lens, like you're trying to analyze it. It's just supposed to be cool and build cool lore.
Maybe if I have seen this movie as a edgy teenager in 2000 who haven't seen enough movies to have proper opinion, I would have given it a pass.
Now, in 2025, I just cant appreciate its 00s sci fi edgelord logic, because the technical issues are actively ruining the movie for me. And its not about a matter of imagination, because Aliens movies do the "hiding the horror in the dark" trick well enough.
Hell, even Forbidden Planet was more creative with its techniques. The monster there is an invisible thing that only half shows its face in one scene lmao. Thats basic suspense movie directing knowledge, which doesnt require big budget tricks to make it happen
That's fine, it's exactly what I've been saying. You just don't get it. You don't have the ingredients inside of yourself to understand it.
You have autism.
You arent an earthrocker
If you didn't grow up listening to shit like this you won't get it
Nah, I was listening to edgy shit like Slipknot and Papa roach in 2000s. I guess in order to appreciate it in 2025, I should have ripped a 480p version of it on a dvd and see it on my ps3. That is as close at it can get to a 00s experience
Yep but in a similar vain DUNC 2 is cool but the character assassination and girl boss shit ruins it.
More importantly the rushed ending fucks the movie, which is what happens in chronicles of riddick.
So sure while I can enjoy the movies, I have watched both movies multiple times with riddicks case I often skip most of the imam shit and skip a lot of the ending just because it is trash. i watch some of the fight and the necro king getting killed or something then just switch off.
Despite all the good things about the movie like really good castings for some characters, (necro king and falco) and beautiful art, sets, armour and spaceship porn, the other issues let it down enough that I can't rate it as a 10/10 movie.
I finally sat down and watched all these Riddick movies knowing nothing about them. I expected to be a series of decent popcorn action moviee. What I got:
pitch black
A surprisingly very entertaining and relatively simple, selfcontained movie about surving a vampire alien world.
chronicles of riddick
fairly boring and nonsensical story about deathworshippers taking over the universe, having virtually nothing to do with pitch black
riddick
modern capeshit quippy dialogie and horrible acting. clearly an attempt to back to plot of PB but way more fucking stupid. complete dogshit movie
tl;dr 1 decent movie, a random clusterfuck, then unredeemable trash
edgy shit
ie good things hated by normalfags because they fear anything that isnt safe, status quo, happy, and politically correct
Movies don't all have to be a 10/10. A satisfying 6/10 is a good time and is worthwhile. Just like Reign of Fire.
Basic take, no genuine thoughts involved
The best part of the franchise is the video games. All the fun of escaping from a grimdark space prison without the melodrama from the films, and the silly fantasy elements kept to a minimum.
bo, it was a completely isolated opinion unaffected by any discourse because i never knew anything about public opinion on these.
you imply this is a popular opinion. it ought to be because its correct. stay buttmad
you have literal autism, not the meme kind.
Your isolated opinion perfectly aligns with the normie position which means you have normie brains and don't have true independent thought. Might as well just say you think the star wars prequels have stilted dialog too.
Yeah, I got the game on my hacked ps3 and I think its the best thing out of the Riddick franchise
It's DVD-core, the early 2000's has tons of mid lower budget films that became weirdly popular cult classics because so many people bought movies back then
escape prison with ship
free to go anywhere and start a new life
get your own cutie tomboy who is really into you
Riddick was kino with the perfect ending
At least it was, until he fucked errythang up...
DVD-Core
Reddit is down the hall and to the left
it's the same room, the walls have been torn down years ago
this movie succeeded in capturing an actually unique scifi atmosphere, but I can't explain why because on paper it should suck
hmmm why is this movie good
I fucking hate zoomers
Shoestring budget scifi movie that utilizes the money perfectly, like a Carpenter movie
Great cast and characters
Tight script
Holds up perfectly on a rewatch decades later
Literally perfect for what it sets out to be
"Duuuurrhh what's good about it?"
It is essentially 3 movies wrapped into one
anon just learned screenplays have 3 acts
All stories have 3 acts you retard. The issue with that movie is that it has 3 disjointed stories it is telling and doesnt tell any of them well because it is spread too thin
Opinions about art are generally subjective. If you don't like it that is fine but I like it. Going to rewatch all 3 today.
Vin's D&D character
stat sheet?
I love low budget sci-fi. A cheap set with some real props routinely wipes the floors with huge budget productions with shiny bright cgi mega cities.
Jack a cute
Shoestring budget scifi movie that utilizes the money perfectly, like a Carpenter movie
Okay I guess
Great cast and characters
Only Vin is great there, the rest are trash. Tell why the fuck there is an Imam and a couple of sandnigglets in a sci fi movie.
Tight script
It drags. The runtime should have been an hour and a half
Holds up perfectly on a rewatch decades later
No it doesnt, you washed up Gen Xer. It looks like shitty 00s music videoclip, with ass camerawork and poorly contrasted colors.
Literally perfect for what it sets out to be
It could have been an actual b movie masterpiece if the director knew how to direct a fucking movie on a tight budget.
Also, not a zoomer
because it's a transport ship taking random people between worlds when it crashed. fucking idiot didn't even pay attention to the movie.
another retarded opinion bait
Pitch Black is great, suck it up fagot
Allakhu Akbar sandniggers are not compatible with sci fi settings. Its like taking a Sikh on board or a christian monk
