Relax there Niobe, I was speaking about only the plot. All I'm saying is there are lots of movies with a would-be messiah figure saving the masses by fighting the evil technology machine. The plot of The Matrix is not special or the first or unique or in that regard.

Neo isn’t just the protagonist hero, he is the ONE. And the story explains WHY there is a chosen one with each creation of the Matrix. Name ONE (1) other movie with a similar story.

yes and no. one of the reasons the matrix has been such a resonant piece of media across many demographics is because of how it explores contemporary plights such as alienation, lack of identity, lack of connection, rejection of traditions, self-empowerment, etc etc etc. the movie dives into these topics in a way that allows people to assign their own personal experiences to them. as such, the story can be about capitalism, about political activism, about trans or sexual identity, or really anything at all

the directors, who would later both transition, have said the movie was about their trans journey. personally, I think that is a retcon because the movie doesn't really invoke much in the way of gender expression. it mostly adheres to very generic gender roles across the story as well; damsel in distress, maternal and paternal figures, hero's journey of the chosen male, etc. I'd certainly be willing to believe that the wachowski's trans-ness had contributed to the way they wanted to tell the story but it never struck me as a direct allegory

I think part of the problem is they thought too much about it, they just didn't have particularly impressive thoughts. the original came together so well because the wachowskis were an unknown quantity to the studio and so they were given a lot of oversight and input. after the massive success, WB made the mistake of treating them like visionary talents when they needed to continue to be tempered
