Why does the West not do big, beautiful historical epics anymore?
Why does the West not do big, beautiful historical epics anymore?
Lack of talent, lack of patience for elaborate set designs and big scopes, studios want to shovel money into endless capeshit because they are good return investments. For example, Lawrence of Arabia is a film that will probably never get made again.
Nolan saves the genre.
Expect nothing less.
They ran out of Heinlein and philip k dick novels to adapt without arnold shewarzenegger.
I knew someone was going to post this, don't ride the hype train until you get a chance to see the blasted thing. It doesn't even come out until next year.
China is making one, but it keeps getting delayed by the Government because Tibetans are massively seething about it. (It's about the rebellion of Uyghurs and Tang rebels against the collapsing Tibetan empire)
youtube.com
Apparently it's release date is now 25th of July, but every time we get to it, the Chinese Government is like "lol no, Tibetans still mad" and it gets knocked back another year. 2 years this has been happening.
Actors union does not allow 1000 acting volunteers anymore
Lawrence of Arabia is a film that will probably never get made again
Because they decided "fuck it, we're gonna take Lawrence on his word because there's too many conflicting accounts to get an accurate picture of his story." It results in a very focused story about a single man.
Now they would genuinely be so caught up in trying to properly "represent" the Arabs in the area that the film would have 40 different subplots and the focus would ultimately go to someone completely different than Lawrence
Well if matt damon would sell h is soul to work in china, what chance do people he pretends to be have a chance? James franco pretending to cut off his arm?
That's not why at all. Your history autist drivel has nothing to do with commercial film.
No, I'm just adding another perspective. I understand your points and they're correct. I'm also pointing out that they, objectively, do not make biopics like they used to, especially when it comes to historic events. The writing style has completely changed
Depicting white peoples' history in a way that celebrates it and doesn't falsify it or apologize for it is unironically not acceptable these days.
what about other peoples' history then
Nobody gives a shit about it.
every single comment section of a Lawrence of Arabia clip on Youtube is full of seething Arabs. If the film was made today, they would have affected the writing to accomodate their bullshit whining. I don't see how he's being inaccurate.
Colour grading has fucked a lot of modern stuff, historical films are always so obnoxiously desaturated, blue and dark.
I blame Fincher for this. Everything must look like the interior of a shitty hotel.
Seems like that is happening to this one
Too difficult. Zoomers and millennials don't care.
One of the lowest rated movies on IMDB for a while was some Hindi movie that referred negatively to a Bangladeshi rebellion in the opening scroll. Bangladeshis review bombed it HARD.
millennials were raised by Gladiator, Braveheart and The Sword in the Stone
Yet the movies they make are nothing but slop. All that good media and for what?
The Fall is 100% beautiful but I'd hesitate to call it big. It's an indie film.
Millennials got to experience LOTR you unbelievable dipshit, arguably the grandest epics in cinema history
Raised by, but turned out to be redditor manchildren as adults.
In fact only gen x voted for Trump when he won the last election.
Gen X are the directing generation right now, millennial directors will start having an impact around 2040.
Has nothing to do with you faggot. Were you the one paying?
No nigger I didn't pay I snuck in with my friends, ever heard of them?
Alexander flopping killed the genre's revival after Gladiator's success. It's a shame too because it's one of my favorite movies (the Ultimate edition that is)
ever heard of them?
John, Arnold and Cassey?
Troy flopped too, didn't gross nearly what was expected.
Jamal and Tyrone?
No, Same and Fag.
Why do movies made after 2005 no longer look like this?
You sound like a Cope and Seethe kind of guy.
Because of required diversity that'll guarantee movies will flop.
this is the real reason. unions ruin everything
unions ruin everything
OY VEY!
You blame Fincher for using color grading correctly?
Everyone tries to copy him now, it's insufferable. Smooth yet gritty.
I just can't buy Matt Damon in a historical role, especially as a nobleman/ non-american
his face is just aggressively piggish and modern
guy plays a good east coast retard and that's it
when will they make an epic about the real hero of China?
guy awkwardly crab walks side to side before some other guy on a bike comes and grabs him
was he drunk?
This. Never really liked him. Don't think he's a good actor much at all. He was terrible in Interstellar, completely wooden.
because doing them almost bankrupted hollywood last time lol
It's annoying China is the only country that makes good historical stuff anymore. Not even Japan does it.
this is the unfortunate truth; giant musicals and big historical epic caused the original Hollywood crash
I have a tremendously bad feeling about it and I say this as somebody who's enjoyed Oppenheimer
I adore greek mythology and I even like trash like Clash of the titans
but this movie looks unwatchable
Pic related what a modern UK produced Arthurian epic would probably be.
Thank god the genre is dead.
