wrong. the first toys were out in 1977. the novelization came out a year before the movie. here's a magazine cover-dated october 1977. there would also be stills in regular movie magazines, newspaper articles about the unexpected success of the movie etc. there is no reason you wouldn't have visual references for the costumes six months after the premiere.
