I'm on the second episode and SGU isn't too bad so far. I've read that it gets better in season two. Why was it so panned? It does feel like a knockoff BSG, but I appreciate that it's set in the SG universe and seems to take itself slightly more seriously than previous iterations.
Stargate Universe
Never watched it, don't want to watch it.
BSG was a let down, and having a knock off version of it is worse.
I just remember they had a main cast member "tech" guy that was chubby and wore jeans and hoody. That's not my SG aesthetic. Just looked low effort.
Why was it so panned? It does feel like a knockoff BSG
you kind of answered it yourself there. it was a big shift in tone that turned off a lot of the fans of the series, add to that most of the human drama just wasn't great. there are still a handful of great episodes that I can go back a rewatch, mostly rush focused ones, and it did seem like it was finding it's feet through the second season, but it was too little too late.
can you believe they made this just a few years before?
youtube.com
Because it was trying to be a cheap knockoff of BSG remake with the gay ass shaky cam snap zoom space shots and slow-mo dramatic music montage garbage every episode to annoying pad shit out. Atrocious stuff.
The first season was also forcing the charisma vacuum young main protagonists: senators daughter, manwhore lieutenant, and tech savant nerd; while trying to push away the actual actors and characters that carried the show: Robert Carlyle's Rush and Lou Diamond Phillips' Telford (Louis Ferreira as Col. Young was the only decent always-present character in the first season). There is also the absolute crutch of the "Seeing Stones" putting a lot of the story arcs in season 1 into full soap opera bullshit.
SGU had spectacular pieces, and easily the best cast of any Stargate franchise, but had schizophrenic direction for the most part and didn't know what it wanted to be and so stumbled along and got axed before it could hit it's potential.
not even hooters could save it.
Why was it so panned
Turbovirgin nerdlinger SG fans literally recoil at the mere mention of romance or sex in a show, not to mention the main character being a fat socially awkward nerd
It has some elements of BSG
It also feels like one of those survival shows, like LOST or something.
I've read that it gets better in season two.
It never gets significantly better.
Why was it so panned?
Because NOTHING happens.
The stones annoyed me more than anything else. Most of the flaws could be forgiven as first season quirks that needs time to get right but the stones were 'SeaQuest DSV' level shit.
It was kino (no pun intended), and Robert Carlyle was the best part
It was also knockoff battlestar AFTER battlestar had shit itself and smeared it all over the walls.
S1 goes to shit after the fifth episode. It has two or three okay ones after that but only starts to pick up later in S2 again. And the second half of it is really damn good. Like they finally figured out what it is supposed to be like.
still no official OST release
it hurts bros...
It was DOG SHIT!!!
They cancelled SGA, 5.4 Million a week, for 90210 meets BSG meets L Word!!!!
The dumbasses lost more than half their viewers, by season 2 they were down to 1.8 million viewers!!!
i like the episode where they think they are about to die and the girl goes off to fuck the "chad" and the beta gets all passive aggressive
It was tonally too different from the previous Stargate shows with the comparisons to BSG being obvious. It might have helped if they had a more traditional Stargate show to fall back on while it found its footing but they cancelled Stargate Atlantis and some blamed it on Stargate Universe.
Because SGUSUCKS.com
It was shit!!!!
here comes the schizo to shit up the thread
inb4 malozzi lesbian etc etc.
SG1, 10 seasons, SGA, 5 Seasons
SGU, a few episodes
Eat shit, Maggot!!!!
eat your meds
Imagine canceling a show that had at least 5 MORE SEASONS just so you could write about dykes. What did that dumb bitch call it? Beverly Hills 90210? What a dumb Bitch Joe Mozilla ways
He did the same To his show; the moment dykes showed up the show bombed!!!
too much personal drama shit no one cares about which gets even worse when those atlantis stones are introduced
never watched the second season i hear it gets better but just didnt give a fuck
dykes
There it is, like clockwork.
He couldn't even blame Scifi!!! Sci-fi learned their lesson after cancelling SG1 for Pain Killa Dyke and Flash Gordon (watch the Hawk man episode I double Dare Ya!!!)!! Both those ghastly shows bombed.
I was there and I've lost Thousands of hours over What could have been!!!! I will never stop! Joe Mozilla, the dumb Bitch, Robbed us!!!
SGA was worse than SGU
It's a shitty space soap opera that has nothing to do with Stargate.
Atlantis was already a garbage pseudo comedy show but low IQ retards praise it despite being retarded shit for women.
I hope you enjoy pointless infighting and slow sad montage about people not being able to eat mcdonald
>5.4 Million viewers SGA
2.6 Million viewers Episode 1, SGU
1.8 Million Viewers Season 2 Episode 1 SGU
Surely you jest
Here's a quote from Gate world
Why is it childish? As far as i'm concerned it's a terrible business decision, not smart at all. To run an untried and tested product, and run it based purely on the belief that watchers will remain loyal as they've done so in the past. I feel it's conceited, and misplaced loyalty. Then to replace a product that's doing well and making money? How is that smart business? I've supported the franchise for the last 14 years and at this point in time i'm saying thanks, but no thanks I disagree with the decision they're making by canceling SGA. And the only way I believe people will learn by their mistakes is by my not supporting that mistake and allowing it to continue. Isn't that watch you teach your kids? You tell them it's wrong and you explain why, and you don't reinforce the mistake. Seems quite logical to me. So tantrum? I think not, maybe in your eyes, but not in mine.
I do believe SGA was canceled for SGU, i've been in contract negotiations a long time, and understand what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe not for a TV franchise, but other business areas I do, and a contract negotiation and agreement, doesn't take a few days. This for me is too coincidental one series canceled whilst another one gets the green light. They've already said they couldn't run the two simultaneously due to budgets, resources etc... so what does that say to you?
Stargate SG-1 was the epitome of campy 90s optimism
america became emo after getting assraeped on 9/11/2001
since then they can only produce grimdark slop
Stargate Universe was yet another symptom of americas dark age
Even worse, the new show runner hated the family safe campiness, and after BSG gained awards especially for the gay agenda, he sought to erase the family Friendly tone for an edgier gay show.
The show focuses on character drama but most of the characters suck and never develope in any meaningful way.
It does feel like a knockoff BSG
thats the fucking reason right there
also they made around 15 seasons of SG1+SGA before SGU and imho it was time to let the franchise rest for a while
It was an actual attempt at BSG meets Beverly Hills 90210
Was mostly soap opera in space. Well not even in space, because like half of it was on earth. Not even interesting soap opera. Just boring from what I remember
popular & profitable = good
Star Wars must be the best Sci-Fi franchise ever by that metric
Blame SG-1 because that's where they lifted the idea
It was, you incorrigible downie, that is until Disney bought the IP.
i thought it was solid, with great premise. i have no idea why people always called it a bsg knockoff because they had nothing in common except featuring a spaceship
It was
Thanks for confirming you have dogshit taste. Slopwars barely even qualifies as sci-fi
SG-1 was total slop for the last few seasons, they should have had the natural end at S7 and made the Stargate Command spinoff with the program going public and storylines set about kino colonies being created. Instead we got fat lazy Macgyver and roid rage Daniel phoning it in and Farscape for some reason. Don S Davis was the bedrock of the show and it went to shit after he left.
Take franchise of light-hearted US military fucking up aliens with SMGs
Make it gritty, dark, hardly any action, and throw in shaky cam for extra fun
Yeah why would people not like the bait and switch. At least it had Lieutenant Knockers.
SGU is the most kino sci fi show ever made and my favorite tv show of all time.
It's actually really fucking good
He needs a new term for it may I suggest the following
unnecessary lesbianism
It's GOAT tier. The only bad episodes are the late season remnant episode where the planet settlers come back and the body swap Stargate heist episode.
One thing we can all agree on is the Destiny was a great design.
lifted and then driven into the ground relentlessly.
do any legit zoomers watch shit from this era on streaming or something
can you even do so, is battlestar galactica on netflix? It would be nice to hear opinions from people that aren't 40 year old suicidals on Anon Babble
prequelshitter millennial opinion
get off the fucking internet
The episode where they swap back to Earth and suck down a billion rems and then have to convince the host bodies to swap back and die of radiation poisoning was pretty good. But other than that yeah, the stupid stones ruined the "far from home" drama.
Last 2 seasons don't count as SG-1
Sloan is having an affair with his best friend Tray's girlfriend Stacy
What he doesn't know is that Stacy is cheating on him with the exchange student Fernando
Now Fernando has gotten detention for cheating on his math test and Drake is going to use this opportunity to put the moves on Stacy, but then he runs into Tray at the Peach Pit!
Jesus fucking Christ, just go to a weird alien planet or something.
Imagine canceling a show that had at least 5 MORE SEASONS
I like SGA, but after the Replicator arc wrapped up it became really clear that the show was running out of steam. Michael wasn't a compelling antagonist, Teyla's baby drama was boring, and the show really didn't feel like it had any idea where it wanted to go.
It's a pity they didn't capitalize on that episode, it was a perfect excuse to leave them cut off; not knowing if the bomb had gone off or if the stones had been destroyed, or if something had just happened that left them cut off. They could have just left that as a future plot hook for S3 or S4 and focused on the crew, the mission, the Berserker threat, etc.
Why was it so panned?
You answered the question already. Fans had tonal whiplash going from their comfy sci fi show of the week to ongoing BSG style serious plot. That said, SGU's big problem was that it didn't introduce enough aliens or plot or lore early on enough and its questions about the ship were not interesting enough to keep peoples attention. It COULD have worked if it gave the characters more to do and explore.
Forgot my pic
Last 2 seasons don't count as SG-1
It is amazing how many endings SG-1 had:
Talks of ending with season 5 and making a tv movie ending.
Talks of ending with season 6 and doing a tv movie, goes full circle back to abydos (finale is called full circle).
Talks of ending with season 7 as Anubis is defeated and they have the Ancient weapons.
Should have ended with season 8, replicators/goauld defeated.
They really didn't know when to quit. And originally Atlantis would have just had the normal SG-1 type cast and was potentially going to be a TV movie then a series, then became a spin off.
GOOLD?
I remember a fairly recent panel or something, they went over their ideas for Season 6 of Atlantis. They ranged from dull to awful. A couple examples I remember:
Atlantis flies back to Pegasus but gets lost and ends up in another new galaxy for a couple episodes
Shepard gets some wizard powers from a device
Kolya returns to attack Atlantis again, and he has the personal shield from Hide and Seek
Somehow Michael has returned
Alternate universe fuckery
A time travel episode or two?
It was uninspired, to put it lightly. Movies like SG-1 got might have pulled it off, but they definitely made the right decision to end the show.
Goes to shit in the last few episodes. Sorry. You could tell the budget was running out, because they killed any plotlines involving special effects and made the whole thing a bunch of political bullshit. As usual, the men should've beaten the women senseless, turned them into concubines and made all of the decisions themselves.
It wasn't good sex and romance. It was cheap drama to get teenage girls and housewives to watch Stargate on Seefee for SOME REASON. It runs the whole gamut of cheap soap from love triangles and "nerd gets the girl but she tragically dies" to weird shit like lesbians making out across space by bodyjacking someone else (which is done completely, uh, straight, without exploring the implications). The show was also somewhat uninterested in its own science fiction, multiple episodes had two or three stories shoved into them because the writers couldn't bother to properly work with just one or didn't trust the ADHD viewers to stay attentive, sometimes it would straight up recycle ideas from SG1 or Atlantis, and I think what really exemplifies SGU to me is a scene late in S1 where they finally get aboard a gate seeding ship, get to a dock with all the gates, glance at it and pass it by without even showing much of a reaction. The fucking Stargate didn't care about its fucking Stargates!
Needless to say the only saving grace was Rush doing Rush things.
in contrast the SGU season 2 ending is still my favorite while I absolutely loathed SGA's
if it gave the characters more to do and explore.
Destiny and Atlantis were both under utilized for exploration episodes. Finding ancient tech can lead to good writing (SGA: The Game) or bad (most stones stories) but in the hands of a good writer, it would be more good than bad. Problem lots of these shows suffer from is that the writing staff just isn't all that creative. They want to rehash old stories from other sources and put them in the new show's context.
Somehow Michael has returned
It can always get worse. Vegas was the last episode and we'll leave it at that.
Look at the bright side though.
It died before it could really become gay and lame.
It didn't get raped. How would it get raped? Just go to the Doctor Who thread and ask for some examples.
holy booba
I recently rewatched most of Stargate and I think SGU held up quite well. Unfortunately, it never stood a chance because of both resentment over it replacing SGA and also pretty bad first 10 seasons. It really didn't have budget to back its ambitions in general, like in terms of aliens.
SGA meanwhile didn't hold up too good to me. It was good when it was airing because more Stargate is good, but it really abandoned its unique elements and because SG1 with less interesting cast and enemies.
My theory is that SGU wasn't originally going to be a Stargate show but SciFi was iffy on doing it so when Atlantis was coming to the end, they repurposed the show proposal to wedge in Stargate. The show then had a built-in audience and they got to keep things going after Atlantis.
Nah, it's natural to want to try something new, it just didn't work.
It was a post-LOST period where everyone wanted to be another LOST but didn't really understand what made it work. A dark time indeed.
Destiny and Atlantis were both under utilized for exploration episodes
I remember, Ronald D Moore or someone talking about Star Trek Voyager and how originally the show would reflect being lost in space, the two crews (Marquis and Federation) making their own new culture as they travelled through the quadrant but all of that was dropped because the executives just wanted TNG 2.0 since DS9 was the station show.
Then you get BSG actually have a fleet lost, having to deal with supply issues and stuff and a lot of people want to copy that. But both SGA and Destiny damaged that sort of lost premise when they became more connected with home, which would have eventually happened somehow anyway. SGA at the end of the first season. The stones ruined a bit of the premise in a similar way to how a show like Voyager just dropped the initial premise.
Sy Fy just wanted a new Stargate show that wasn't more of the same and wanted to appeal to a different audience whilst retaining a franchises older fans. I don't think it was repurposed or anything.
If I was making a Stargate spin-off, I would send them to another galaxy that was seeded by the Ancient and devastated by some kind of disaster, but wouldn't give them a home base and made them camp in the woods for the entire show, forcing them to actually trade and deal with locals.
Pull your Head out of your ass, Boyo!!!
Doesn't change the fact it had 5 Million dedicated Viewers!!!!!
The first season where literally nothing happens pissed me off so much. I get the survival vibe they were going for but you get entire episodes like
we need air
we need water
we need food
we need fuel
and the characters are fucking whiny ass bitches. Fuck that lesbian Asian cunt. Fuck Col. Young.
Star Wars has always been shit and barely classed as SciFi
Test audiences wanted nothing to do with that filth which served to piss off Joe Mozilla! He wanted the award BSG got, award for having gay characters. Immediately he cancelled SGA!!
obligatory
most Kino
SGUSUCKS.com
I feel really weird about Carlyle. He's genuinely a phenomenal actor but something about the way his face looks makes me want to throw up.
Making the Lucian Alliance the initial antagonists was really fucking weird. They were a band of human worlds and a criminal organisation.
I'm 50, you pompous mong!
Funny you mention Voyager and the Maquis/Federation when Universe had the Lucian Alliance members end up there.
Asgard beams really screwed up balance of power in the show. Lucian Alliance weren't as impressive as Gua'uld, but they could turn the tables on SGC because they were (in theory at least) just as cunning and had vast resources. Past-Unending it's hard to accept, but the writers seem to basically have pretended the beams to not exist.
S1 of SGA was kino but they had to fuck it up by going back and forth to Earth. Should have kept them isolated but able to communicate via the compressed transmission, like Voyager with it's later season mail call.
It still had 5 Million viewers. Sci-fi Warned Mozilla, But I Love Dyke Joe wasn't listening.
SGA cancelled because Test audiences didn't want dykes in their entertainment
Joe Mozilla.cancelled SGA songs could make a lame BSG gay series
before it became Lame and Gay
Lucian Alliance weren't as impressive as Gua'uld
I know it would have been a Goa'uld rehash, but I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have a Goa'uld end up there. A minor System Lord and his Jaffa in place of the Alliance.
Would have had a lot more conflict and potential for stories.
I think there was also gonna be an episode where Teyla's baby was magic...
It was somewhat entertaining to see the writers squirm to explain this bizarre choice that a group of essentially space pirates could stand up to post-SG1 Tauri in a meaningful capacity
All of what you're talking about is NOTHING compared to what befell DW, Star Trek, capeshit and virtually all geek entertainment only five years later.
Did anyone ever find it a shame that Stargate got no good videogames or expansion into other media? There was a recent video game, a real time tactics game called Timekeepers which I haven't played. But I swear there were several failed games, FPS games, and an MMO. I used to have to play source mods and stuff for Garysmod to get a Stargate fix.
Sci-fi had Nothing to do with it!!!! They warned Joe Mozilla!!!!!
Lucian Alliance was so fucking stupid and trying to force them as a legitimate threat was laughable.
always been
Nice try , Disney shill!
Still had 5 Million weekly viewers!!!!!
that image
WTF did Dolly Parton do to Disney?
Stargate is cursed by Ra to never have good videogames
That's exactly what BSG did in the beginning, copying that was such a big mistake.
Well since you put it like that I'm forced to relent!!!
All the Stargate gamers just play minecraft mods now
Hopefully she pegged them good!!!!
Are there stargate minecraft mods?
I think they fit well enough to generally lower stakes of SGU.
Problem, again, is that after SG-1 concluded, the power dynamics of the show was off. SGC had good defences and but weak offences (Started with iris, but no ships, got into defensive but not offensive alliance with Asgard, got ships that sucked, upgraded shields long before weapons), which set the show apart from something like Star Trek where the Feds were always a major galactic power with top of the line guns. A powerful group of ruthless criminals hardened by dodging galactic overlords and inheriting most of their power based fit right in. But the spectre of Asgard beams haunts the show.
I fucking love the Destiny.
The 3 Stargates represent different eras of tv. Original is an episodic series. Atlantis has it's one offs and is episodic, but there are seasonal arcs/ half season story's. Universe is Lost or Battlestar. One directly leads to the next and you are supposed to watch it all the way through.
When they had two episodes in a row where they thought the ship was gonna crash and they were all gonna die
we're about to collide with a brap giant AAAA
oh gravity well sling shots are how the ship gets around
we're about to collide with a sun AAAA
oh this is how the ship refuels
Universe Sucks though!!!!
You can probably infer from the naming structure that it started as a single episode. Didn't really warrant the two.
Now Amazon own Stargate. They ruined Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time. They will ruin James Bond. And Stargate will sit and languish some more.
I just hope it stays dead. I might trust Apple TV to do something good with it, but even that's unlikely.
I hope they just sit on it and do nothing, I couldn't fucking take them turning Stargate into some kind of Star Trek Discovery type slop.
yeah and watching a show going nowhere on a weekly basis sucked ass
no one really explores the ship
no one checks out the cool tech
they just do the bullshit military vs. civilian chest-thumping
who's sleeping with who
They're gonna make StarGate gayer than Doctor Who!! It'll be dykes!!! Lots and lots of dykes! Wimpy Gay men and Girl bosses; every female a dyke!!!
Lucian Alliance
They wrote themselves into a corner with the unending cycle of ever more ridiculous power levels and bad guy superweapons so a bunch of space pirates with hijacked hataks is about as threatening as a wet fart.
The Jaffa forming competing warbands with First Primes simply taking over their former master's territory would be more plausible.
and then the first season cliffhanger hinges on Seska and the Kazon hijacking Voyager, yawn
and I stopped following what was going on with what's her face miscarried but kept saying "alien gods took my baby :)"
This is what I hated about SGU, the pacing was dogshit. And I felt weird seeing people on this board praise some of it back in the day. People used to meme the fuck out of Rush posting that same picture of him at a console. Everything is going somewhereee
you could tell they were also copying the religious aspects from BSG with the space gods and all but ehhh, it doesn't go anywhere
Fix the damn ship, RUUUUUUUSSSSHHHH!!!!
No they didn't. Joe Mozilla cared more about dykes than a believable enemy. Most.of the wrath are still out there.
The Jaffa forming competing warbands with First Primes simply taking over their former master's territory would be more plausible.
I mean some slimey minor System Lord who stood out the way when the Tauri fucked everyone up who sees the Destiny as his way of escape could have been decent, that way you can have someone fun play a Goauld
Every fucking episode GOT TO FIX THAT
I swear every episode of S2 the blonde chick that Young knocked up (while he looked really sad) she goes "it's okay, gods took my baby :)" "did I mention that gods took my baby? :)"
Did you forget the best episode
The natural end was season 8. Seasons 9 & 10 should never have been done and were probably done at the insistence of Shanks, fully aware that he'd never make it outside the Stargate franchise.
Season 9 and 10 was awesome! And the 5 Million viewers supports my point!!!!
9 and 10 was supposed to be a new show but higher ups said a rebrand was too expensive
S9 and 10 are better than S7 and S8.
9 & 10 were dogshit Shankswank only saved by the hotties and US audiences being easily baited by the Jihad-theme meta at the time.
the producers wanted to stop the show at S7 and switch to a movie series exactly like Star Trek TOS.
except the MGM and Sci-Fi Channel execs saw that the show made a ton of money on DVD sales and thus forced the producers to continue.
the Stargate Command rebrand was proposed as a trick to avoid the problem of SG-1 actors probably leaving very soon, (Daniel had already left, Carter was hesitating, O'Neil kept asking for less screentime because he had to commute every week from LA to Vancouver with a kid daughter). but the execs vetoed it. too risky.
the ideas for the movies/SGC series, notably Atlantis becoming the main gate base of Earth, were recycled for a spin-off (double DVD sales!) with Atlantis relocalised to another galaxy at the last minute. that's why S1 of Atlantis and even more S8 of SG-1 felt so janky with a lot of half-baked scripts.
after this the execs still wanted more but O'Neil was really out, so the producers had to reinvent the series from scratch.
finally the DVD market slowed but more importantliy the MGM was bankrupt (again).
they found themselves in the opposite situation with execs wanting a new show with a new cast to reset all actors' salaries. maybe it could revive DVD sales, but it was mostly a tax write-off for the MGM who already knew that the franchise was no longer sustainable with its current finances.
the producers took the bait in the hope to not let the franchise die on the spot but realised too late that SG-U was doomed from the start.
the producers wanted to stop the show at S7
The show almost ended/got cancelled at both the end of season 5 and 6. And almost stopped at 7 and 8. And at all these points there were talks of doing tv movies.
No one wanted BSG style drama. No one wanted teen BSG drama. SGAtlantic felt similar to BSG drama as well. The writers killed stargate with that BSG drama shit
This is from an earlier post.some 17 years ago in a response to some bloke from Gate World!!!!
Joe Mozilla cancelled a show that had 5.4 Million dedicated Viewers and of that number a million plus signed signatures trying to save their beloved series.
"

yes but at S7 the producers themselves wanted it. to avoid being taken by surprise later on. they also wanted it at S8 but they took more time to plan the renewal.
5.4 Million weekly viewers
Almost cancelled
Try again!!
as I said, schizo, setting up a new show means
lower actor salaries
tax write-off
Producers and actors (like Shanks) have discussed this before
back then many shows were cancelled with similar ratings. execs always thought that new shows would bring even more money. DVD sales is what saved Stargate. just like VHS sales saved X-Files a few years earlier.
Almost. Cancelled
When was this?
We were there. It had viewers! Sci-fi hangled the cost of the seasons but after they phucked it all up by ordering Pain Killa Dyke and Flash Gordon(Watch the Hawk man Episode) they learned their lesson which is why they Warned Joe Mozilla About wanting to cancel a show with 5 plus Million viewers.
Same thing I've been asking. It had 5 Million dedicated Weekly viewers.
Are you a schizo anon? I was talking about SG-1 not SGA?
I thought SGU sucked too but what's with the schizo repeating the same posts over and over?
I've been answering Myself?WTF!!!!!
The above was meant for you!!!!
It's been a very weird day, AnonS.
AnonS
eh? qrd?
You killed the thread, anon. Are you a bot?
How am I shilling for Disney by rightfully pointing out that Shit Wars is neither good nor is it real SciFi?
I hope they do just so I can witness your absolute meltdown
Not OP or this schizo you're talking about, but I actually didn't mind S1 of SGU. It was carried hard by Rush and the hotties though.
It was tonally too different from the previous Stargate shows with the comparisons to BSG being obvious. It might have helped if they had a more traditional Stargate show to fall back on while it found its footing but they cancelled Stargate Atlantis and some blamed it on Stargate Universe.
Yup, they got away from military ground troops humor and culture and drifted to a pseudo-Startrek "scientists save the day ALWAYS" theme.
Which is tolerable if that's what the main audience wants, but STARGATE had the bread & butter core audience of Military Dudes being UNUSUALLY RESPECTED as TV characters and using solid military tactics to win the battles.
Or in simple terms, GI JOE without HE-MAN plots of chasing a villain away for another day.
STARGATE started with the strong respect of military grunts as individual human beings, but drifted rapidly away from that season by season and tended to leave the guys not in the main cast as "disposable redshirts" while the scientists, archeologists, and Chair Force got the applause.
Granted, some of it was absolutely necessary with Xeno-species, ancient artifacts, keeping everything powered up, and so on... But the main cognitive self insert demographic was the military guys that weren't constantly insulted (an aberration in Hollywood shows where every military dude is either an idiot, a criminal running a scam, or a psycho trying to kill everyone foolish enough to follow his orders). STARGATE for awhile acknowledged the soldiers as individual human beings with families, personal goals, wide varieties of educational focuses, personalities that weren't cheap throwaway gags, and genuine intelligence.
It's the fatal flaw of SGU where they drifted from RESPECT THOSE WHOM FIGHT FOR YOUR GOALS to "generic space battle drama with Egyptian Motifs".
He shits up literally every SG thread. He got so fucking buck-broken over his shitty SG-1 spinoff getting canned that he's still constantly seething about it 17 years later
It does feel like a knockoff BSG
You mean a knockoff Farscape/Voyager/Lost In Space.
SGAtlantic felt similar to BSG drama as well.
You are fucking high no it didn't. SGA felt like discount SG1. It was nothing like SGU except for the plot device of them being standard in a city instead of a starship.
episode where they swap back to Earth and suck down a billion rems and then have to convince the host bodies to swap back and die
Wait what??
Are you taking about SGU or something else because don't remember that
Atlantis may have been underwhelming but the city itself was kino. I wish they explored more parts of it. I love the very few
we discovered another hidden room!
episodes
SGU has literally zero in common with Farscaoe other than its basic premise of being lost away from Earth. Lost in Space with Rush as Dr. Smith sure but the tone in the closer to the 1998 movie than any other iteration. As far as Voyager goes. The tone is totally different and SGU isn't really about meeting aliens. It's more just about survival and way darker with way more non-Trek like internal conflict among the crew.
I think there was also gonna be an episode where Teyla's baby was magic...
tvtropes.org
MAGIC BABY SAVES THE DAY = JUMP THE SHARK
"V: The Series"
"ALIEN 3"
"Doctor Who"
"S.O.A.P."
Pretty much the MAGIC HALF-HUMAN BABY almost is a guaranteed deathblow to a series.
Most times it's the rugpull factor.
Usually it's the AHSOKA factor, dumb severely retarded lesbian pushes the MAGIC BABY "or I quit or I say I was raped" screeching... to end built up plotlines... and the audience rightfully despises it because it's basically "breaking the universe", but more IMPORTANTLY, breaking viewer theories on how the series will overcome the dire jeopardy and it pisses them off because it's a lazy supernatural asspull solution rather than a clever satisfying solution.
Think you're getting confused with replies but yeah that's SGU. They visit Earth with the stones and get attacked with radiation
I think you are getting Stargate storylines confused because I would remember that. I've seen the entire SGU series more than once.
It's been a while, but I'm sure it's an episode where Eli and Wray go to Earth with the stones, I think it might even be the White House or something similar? An attack happens and they have to defuse a bomb and they use the FTL drop-out to tell them the bomb plans/specs etc.
Did anyone ever find it a shame that Stargate got no good videogames or expansion into other media?
That's what STARGATE UNIVERSE was supposed to unlock. Faction Based tech trees, MMO event plots, unlockable ships and worlds.

There could've been a good market for MILITARY PUZZLE SOLVING SHOOTERS, especially when Half-Life was huge with Portal Games following it. But they bungled that opportunity bigtime.
Could have tapped the Lara Croft, Half-Life, Puzzle Solvers, Fallout, and Military Adventure theme audiences easily. I figure MGM was more lawsuit happy like Nintendo against anything that wasn't produced "in house" or like SONY where their primary strategy is to tell hooker crybaby stories of mean boyfriends, then go on a psycho drug binge, break everything, roll around in their own poop, and wonder how everything got fucked up again.
that one actress had big titties
Did anyone else think the writers were just using the stones as some weird fetish for the entire series? There's parts where the Colonel and the other guy he swaps with starts fucking the Colonel's wife (also the same actress that plays the Ancient in SG1) and then Eli and Chloe getting with people in other peoples bodies. At one point Rush even fucks the disabled scientist in Ming Na-Wen's body. There's plenty more too
That's not SGU. I don't know which of the other shows it is but it's not SGU.
The White House
Definitely not SGU. Something as outlandish as that is not in the wheelhouse of SGU. Just like crazy shit wasn't allowed in Andor.
You made me actually search for it, it was S2 and it was Greer and Wray, not Eli.

If you are stuck ten billion light years from Earth with no other options you are gonna make some exceptions to get laid. Absolutely the volunteering from Earth are obviously down for anything that will give them a chance to hang out in a top secret alien starship. I mean as long as you are a straight dude but being asked to do anything gay I can see guys being down for banging with the stones.
I'm pretty sure there was an episode where pic related was going round fucking everyone too.
Ok now I remember that. It wasn't the Whitehouse it was Fleet Command. Which makes more sense.
My mind was probably getting confused with the people that swapped with them, being more official etc.
Nerdy girls are the BIGGEST sluts. They will do the weird shit.
Wanting the world to be filled with more shit just to spite a few autistic retards on a mexican dolphin sighting forum
Humanity would have colonized the solar system by now if we had less people with your mindset.
In the actress for Lt. Hooters Wikipedia page the entry for her role in SGU is called "Stargate Universe Kino" that is what the show is called in her wiki page I shit you not. Somebody out there is based.
Wasn't that the name of the webshorts that went along with SGU?
Am I the only one here that that thought this dude was kino and based?
One of the best fighters on the ship
Ex Lucian alliance terrorist that is so bro tier you earn the full trust of the crew
Gets to impregnate Lt. Hooters and have grandkids and great grandkids with her.
All I know is that is what they called the in universe floating cameras Eli used in the show.
Entire Stargate universe in general got busted during SG-1 with the villain escalation. My constant complaint with SG-1 was the perpetual escalation and having to have a "big bad." Taking out the Goa'uld System Lords so
Heh, I see what you did there but a lot of what I didn't like about SGU, even season 2, was what VOY failed to do with the Starfleet/Marquis dynamic that went fuck all nowhere.
People used to meme the fuck out of Rush posting that same picture of him at a console.
¡Hola chicos, vamos a arreglar la Galáctica!
We will probably never see another board meltdown as massively huge as the board meltdown regarding Ginn.
Ori were shit but Adria and Ba'al are the only good villains in SG-1 once that NID fuck played by John De Lancie died. Also Vala Mal Doran was great.
Yeah that was bullshit, throw nerdlinger a bone.
Why was it so panned
It took everything that was unbearable about SG:A and BSG and cranked it up to 11. The highs were higher than probably anything else in the whole series, but it was just so much gay interpersonal melodrama all the goddamn time. I never really watched any of Stargate during the original broadcast run, especially not SG:A or SG:U but after watching through all of it a couple years back long after the fact and disconnected from the community consensus, SG:U is just more frustrating than anything. There was so much cool ground they'd barely start to lay then they'd immediately go back into yelling and crying and acting stupid on purpose to cause disagreements to push the plot forward. It only seemed in the last handful of episodes of the second season did they really figure out a reasonable balance and point the plot into a concrete direction. Then the S2 finale dropped firing on all cylinders in a way the show never had at any point before, and immediately after premier it was announced that the show would not be renewed. I can't speak on exactly why contemporary viewers hated it so much, but I sure can tell you why it got such a strong response from me.
The franchise is action comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously. SG1 started having a self parody episode a season pretty much.
Then SGU wants to be a grimdark show because BSG was huge. But it can’t even be its own little weird bubble, it has to grimdark the entire universe back home as well, and whip actors into cameos for legitimacy, smearing the corny old shows with this tonal shift.
I’ve mellowed on the show since the start though, the core concept is fine, it reintroduces some mystery to the ancients and the stargate network. It’s got a bit of what a ST:Voyager show /should/ have been trying to survive in hostile territory with alien tech. If it was a brand new show I’d probably have been hyped at the time.
I appreciate that Stargate had a pretty good canon, there’s always some reference to why shit they tried before can’t work this time. Or they try an old method and it fails, very iterative. Constant powerleveling that’s pretty clear as well. They go from zero tech to acquiring FTL combat ships and starting to mess around with the tech of the ancients. They should never have introduced them though. The spiritual shit is the weakest and any time they meet the ancients they’re just arrogant humans.
Not sure how they’d do another SG show. Atlantis did it right in moving the action to another galaxy to get some breathing room for lore. You can push the reset button but the climate on ancient aliens shit has changed and so has the tv biz. You don’t get 3 seasons of 20 episodes to figure yourself out anymore. It’s gonna be some 8 episode season with a year or two between them. Which doesn’t leave a lot of room for levity or character episodes or just fun ideas. It also tends to mean grimdark in sci fi. “Prestige television” shit.
They had a great run. The show “ends” multiple times perfectly fine.
The stones should come with a "you break it, you buy it policy."
