The decision to portray him as a creepy angry neurotic person rather than as some sort of total badass gives his character depth. I think Lucas fucked up Anakin's fall-to-evil arc, but at least he got the basics right: Attack of the Clones Anakin is clearly a weird, twisted person whose passions fuck with him. You can at least sort of see how he could become Vader, if you squint and ignore the fact that his mannerisms, diction, and sense of humor are very different from Vader's.
Meanwhile with Rey, well I have no idea where her character goes after The Force Awakens, cause I hated that movie so much that I never watched its sequels, but in The Force Awakens she was just written as completely boring, with no depth whatsoever.

They were granted a 10 year fucking deal in which they were the some publishers and developers of Star Wars games and in those 10 years, we only got 5 games. Two games set before the OT, the Jedi Order games. Battlefront 1 didn't even include sequel content, The Old Republic MMO obviously didn't as well. Then Battlefront 2 included sequel content. That's it. Videogames were a huge part of keeping the prequels in good graces and Disney fucked up in that front.

There was just simply no good integration between merch/toys and videogames because Disney either knew what a failure the sequels were or they are just that stupid.

For the prequel trilogy to work, for you to actually give a shit about the tragedy of Anakin's fall to the dark side, it should have made you love him first as a hero. He should have been charismatic. But the movies go straight from annoying precocious child to brooding, whiny adult. I felt no attachment to him at all.
