Lex Luthor has high speed photography of Superman flying at a speed undetectable by the human eye while saving a baby thrown from a building. He asks the question why the baby was not atomized upon Superman catching him. I believe the explanation was similar to Barry Allen the Flash and how people are automatically protected by the Speedforce.

I think comics writers handwaved that sort of thing saying his strength and flight are based on some kind of telekinetic energy field that only applies to objects he touches, but envelopes them even if they're planet sized. Superboy had a weaker version but with finer control
