The scars scenes were really cool even if sometimes they could feel a little bit too cartoonish, the hospital scene is fine, but it feels jarring for THIS Ellie, just a few minutes ago she was all happy chatting with Dina and doing jokes and stuff (and Dina even has to get her a speech to motivate her) but now all of a sudden she's getting full ruthless revenge mode ala Game Ellie

Season 1 sticks closer to the game but is full of these shitty little downgrades
Ellie likes Astronauts because she fantasizes about escaping the shitty post-dystopia earth and because she's mildly suicidal, hence the bit about all the Appollo 1 astronauts dying. that was most likely foreshadowing of the conversation she's going to have with Joel next episode: "at least they died for a good cause"
it has nothing to do with her being interested enough in studying that she could have ever actually been an astronaut.

Henry in the game wasn't one-dimensional. His death had more impact there because he was about as good and moral as it's possible to be in that world

To thematically precede Joel being unwilling to sacrifice a child for the greater good just like Henry with Sam (especially after Sam gave Joel the excuse he was looking for that maybe Ellie wasn't the key to a cure), and show how destructive a revenge quest can be just like Abby with Joel and Ellie with Abby. Which all sounds good on paper, but it had zero room to breathe. We never even saw Michael or what happened before the revolt and it was only like a week before Joel and Ellie cross Kathleen. Some of the flashbacks in season 1 were the best parts of the series and we absolutely could've used some of that for stuff like Kansas City, but shows these days are obsessed with being snappy 7-9 episode affairs every couple years while still wasting screentime. It's part of what annoys me about an entire episode being dedicated to a sappy gay love story and how much people glazed it.
