Dead Pigs is a film about image—how it’s curated, performed, commodified, and, most importantly, implodes. Based on a real incident where thousands of diseased pigs were dumped into the Huangpu River, the film develops a mosaic narrative that loosely binds a cast of characters: a pig farmer, a salon owner, a rich misfit, an English-speaking architect, and a busboy posing as someone he's not. But more than any of them individually, the true protagonist here is spectacle—the garish, gaudy kind that emerges from late capitalist desperation, neoliberal rot, and China’s impossible fantasy of modernity-without-cost.

Yan has a surprising fluency in tonal dissonance. One scene will be playfully absurd, punctuated by neon-soaked karaoke. The next will quietly devastate, with a handheld camera lingering just long enough to expose a character’s spiritual erosion. This is a film that understands how alienation doesn’t always look like alienation—sometimes it looks like luxury interiors, performative kindness, influencer-bait aesthetics, or a single-family home built to resemble a Spanish villa in the middle of Shanghai.

Even when it flirts with quirk (and it definitely flirts), the emotional and political stakes remain sharp. The house that refuses to be demolished? It’s a tired metaphor, sure, but the film knows this. It leans into the theatricality of resistance and doesn’t demand the viewer’s moral applause.

Its structure strains to balance ensemble complexity with momentum, and while its politics simmer beneath the surface, they don’t always reach a full boil. The satire occasionally folds into its own aesthetic pleasure, and there’s a risk that viewers (especially white ones) will walk away mistaking the film’s pageantry for quirk rather than critique. But if Dead Pigs stumbles, at least it stumbles toward something—toward an image of modernity built not on progress, but on refuse. It names its spectacle and dares you to ask who paid for it.

Breathless is the only good one because it was co-written by Truffaut, it has some kind of structure and Jean Seberg was a cute.

Naturewise, San José is just a big city, so you won't see sloths or anything like that in here, but there are tons of fun things to do, like going to the cafés, the arthouse joints, and the parks. Not really something I'd rec for a tourist, but for a national it's pretty comfy. Café Rojo is probably the best joint for local food you'll get in the city, very cheap, too. I also know where the whores are ;)
