Used to happen to me all the time in a sales job as I was always making shady sales and pissing clients off. But my stats were amazing so I never got serious repercussions.
The biggest one I did was a whole operation. First I keylogged my workstation and got the IT guy to help me with a vague issue. I took his creds and used them to get into the back end of our client databases. I got a huge list of recent past clients and sold them all before the other department dedicated to those leads could get to them. As a result they had -40% performance for the quarter while ours was up by 25% just from my sales and 2 friends who were in on it.
A lot of people in the other department accused me but it fell on deaf ears and they laid off 20% of their staff. Then I got my photo on the wall and a plaque from the CEO for driving that quarter's revenue kek.
However, that other department investigated and finally figured it out. My bosses brought me to the CEO's office acting all serious and the same CEO who shook my hand earlier was there too, looking all stern and cucked. They kept trying to scare me with litigation for 15 minutes and I just nodded or smiled. Finally, they said they'll be watching me and my next transgression will get me fired (lol).
That's when I realized they couldn't do shit because they had already given accolades and laid people off thanks to me. They could not go back since it would be a huge loss of face, so they kept the secret. Just like the city with McNulty's fake serial killer. I even got a massive promotion the following year since my stats had to have been taken at face value even though they all knew kek.
