as someone who stopped watching pokemon after a few episodes as a kid whats the deal with the rotating cast? I get ash is the main character but why didnt the just keep brock and misty and the trio going around to all the new places

At the beginning of Season 2, they go to the Orange Islands where Brock meets Professor Ivy and immediately wants to fuck her AND her assistants, so much more so than his regular crushes that he decides to stay with them for a while. They meet a local artist kid named Tracy and pal around with him for the season but when they return to Ash's hometown, Tracy gets a job with Professor Oak and Brock is convalescing because he couldn't score with Professor Ivy.

Seasons 3 and 4 went back to the main three of Ash, Misty, and Brock.

Because new games needed to be advertised and a female protag being optional made whoever it was an automatic Misty replacement. Ash is functionally every single male protag in the games.

When Pokemon caught on in the west there was that whole debacle about Jynx being a nigger. The anime director worried burgers would think Brock was making fun of Asians because of his eyes, so they replaced him with a true Aryan in Tracey. But everybody loved Brock and got pissed he was gone so they brought him back. I don't know the exact reason why they started rotating out the girls, but I imagine with May they wanted to show off their female playable character, Crystal had one first but the Johto anime was well underway. Did the same thing with Dawn, and kept Brock around both times since everybody likes him. By Black & White I guess they returned to the first formula by having two gym leaders from that region.
